Hello and good day to you, residents of the peaceful and picturesque windy hamlets of southeastern Vermont! I imagine a number of you west and north of the Brattleboro area are waking up to a messy aftermath from our late December ice storm. Some may be without power as well.
Luckily, that sloppy storm departs Tuesday. We will see an upper level system swing through with some scattered snow and rain showers Tuesday night and into Wednesday.
Thursday looks like fair weather before more rain arrives for Friday into early Saturday. Then we look a bit unsettled with occasional mixed showers and milder weather this weekend. I expect we'll turn colder early next week with generally fair weather before a possible winter storm by next Wednesday.
With our weekly weather picture painted, let's dive into the dailies!
For Tuesday, New Year's Eve, we will be dealing with our storm slowly departing. There will likely still be some freezing drizzle, light sleet or snow showers in Windham County, with plain drizzle possibly in Brattleboro and points due south.
Highs should reach the mid to upper 30s. As an upper low approaches the region, temperatures aloft will cool and promote scattered snow showers at night. Some mountain areas may pick up a coating to an inch of new snow overnight with lows in the mid to upper 20s. Be careful if you're heading out for Last Night festivities.
For Wednesday, a few scattered snow showers will be possible under partly sunny skies. The best chance for snow showers is in the mountains of western Windham County where skies should remain mostly cloudy. Highs will reach the low to mid 30s with lows in the low to mid 20s as any snow showers abate as the night wears on.
For Thursday, our upper low and trough departs the region, and high pressure works in to give us a mostly sunny day with highs in the mid to upper 30s. Lows will only drop into the upper 20s as clouds increase.
Another storm system will be tracking northwest of us on Friday, placing southern Vermont on the mild side of the storm. However, precipitation will move in during the early morning when it's cold, which will allow snow and ice to break out before changing to plain rain later in the morning. Highs will reach the upper 30s. A few mixed rain and snow showers are expected Friday night, with lows near freezing.
The weekend looks unsettled as a trough moves east into New England with highs in the low to mid 40s on Saturday and upper 30s to low 40s on Sunday with lows in the upper 20s to low 30s and scattered rain and snow showers both days.
Early next week will see a renewed shot of colder air as highs will only be in the 20s and 30s Monday and Tuesday with generally fair weather and a chance for snow by next Wednesday. Have a great week!
