BELLOWS FALLS — Stone Church Arts presents Corner House, who describe themselves as “spirited songwriters with an old-time groove.” The award-winning instrumentalists perform Saturday, Nov. 23, at 7:30 p.m., in the Chapel at Immanuel Episcopal Church, the stone church on the hill, 20 Church St.
The harpist Maeve Gilchrist has declared, “These fine musicians and lovely people think about each note they make and it comes together in something bigger. Simply beautiful music.”
Steeped in tradition, the Boston-based band writes and arranges music with Irish, Scottish, Appalachian stringband, and bluegrass influences.
In the autumn of 2017, Corner House - Ethan Hawkins on guitar, Louise Bichan on fiddle, and Ethan Setiawan on mandolin - debuted at FreshGrass Festival in North Adams, Mass., before recording an EP and touring Scotland the following year. Returning from overseas, the three found cellist Casey Murray living just down the street and invited the contra-dance-influenced player to join the band.
The recently-released EP, Smart Folks, is the first from Corner House to include Murray on cello and clawhammer banjo, and the second overall from the group, with four originals and two contemporary Irish numbers.
