Former ambassador to speak on ‘The Betrayal of the Kurds’

BRATTLEBORO — On Friday, Nov. 8, at 7:30 p.m., the Windham World Affairs Council presents former ambassador Peter W. Galbraith, who will present a talk entitled “The Betrayal of the Kurds: A firsthand report from Northeast Syria and an analysis of the consequences.”

As he prepares to depart for a conference in Brussels, Galbraith has offered to share with the WWAC community his views on the situation of the Kurds in Northeastern Syria.

The talk will take place in the sanctuary of Centre Congregational Church at 193 Main St.

Galbraith will discuss Trump's “green light,” the Turkish invasion, the Rojava revolution, Russia's triumph, the loss of American dominance in the Middle East, and what it means for the Islamic State. He will also cover his efforts to get children out of the Islamic State's camps in Northeast Syria.

Galbraith has had a remarkable history with the Kurds and, since 2014, he has made a number of trips to northern Syria because of his long-standing ties with the Kurdish people. He has worked on Near East issues for nearly 40 years in government and as a mediator. In 2015, he led the first Harvard University trip to Iran since the 1979 revolution.

As the first U.S. Ambassador to Croatia, from 1993 to 1998, Galbraith was the negotiator of the 1995 Erdut Agreement that ended the Croatia War. A longtime resident of Townshend, he began his career teaching at Windham College, the School for International Training, and Keene State College. From 2011 to 2015, he represented Windham County in the Vermont Senate.
