During the month of September, Windham County Democrats will caucus in each town to reorganize their town committees. Vermont requires that political parties caucus between Sept. 10 and Sept. 30 for the purpose of reorganizing their town committees and selecting the committee officers who will serve for the next two years.
John Hagen, chair of the Windham County Democratic Committee, said in a news release that his committee's goal is to organize caucuses in all 22 towns in the county. Looking ahead to the national election on Nov. 3, 2020, Hagen said he believes town committees serve a vital role in encouraging citizen participation in the democratic process.
“Democracy depends upon active and informed voters,” said Hagen. “Along with organizing activities that get people out to vote, town committees can also hold events that introduce candidates to voters and that explore issues relevant to the local community.”
Because the reorganization caucus will be the starting point for town committee preparation for the 2020 election, Hagen encourages all interested voters to attend the caucus in their town.
The notice providing details for each caucus will be posted at the town offices and publicized around each town. Voters can also visit the Windham County Democrats Facebook page (@windhamdemocrats), where a list of county caucus sites is maintained and regularly updated.
To participate in a town's caucus, an individual must be a registered voter in that town. Voters cannot participate in the reorganization caucus of more than one political party.
Reorganization of the town committees in September will be followed by a county caucus on Oct. 22 to reorganize the county committee and a state caucus on Nov. 16 to reorganize the state committee.
