Hello and good day to you, winsome Windham County residents! The Summer Solstice has passed our latitude, and the resultant warmer and muggier surges that lag that astronomical tip of Earth's northern-hemispheric hat toward our star are starting to show in our region this week.
We'll see highs break into the low to mid 80s for lower elevations of southeastern Vermont from Wednesday through Sunday, along with increasing humidity and shower and thunderstorm chances on Wednesday and over the weekend.
The late week period looks partly to mostly sunny with sweet summer conditions, and fair weather weather following our upcoming weekend. With our broad strokes roughed in, let's paint in the daily details!
For Wednesday, we'll be watching a piece of energy zip east in the zonal flow (i.e., west-to-east) and track through New England.
This will combine with highs in the mid 70s to low 80s or so and increasing humidity to produce scattered showers and thunderstorms Wednesday afternoon and evening. Not everyone gets wet, but keep an eye to the west and northwest if you're out and about after noon.
Any showers and storms wane with the setting sun, and lows will drop into the low 60s under mostly cloudy skies.
For Thursday, after some early morning patchy fog, we can expect partly to mostly sunny skies with highs in the mid 70s over the high terrain and low to mid 80s in the low elevations near the Connecticut River.
Lows will drop to near 60 degrees as high pressure crests through the region with light winds, and a very nice Friday on the way.
For Friday, we'll enjoy the pick of the week and a true early summer day. It should be fairly muggy, but not oppressive. Mostly sunny skies will again produce highs in the mid 70s to mid 80s from high elevation to low. Low temperatures will again drop to near 60 degrees as clouds increase.
By the start of the weekend, a trough of mid level low pressure drops south out of Canada into New England and sends a couple of disturbances and a frontal boundary through the region.
Expect showers, downpours and thunderstorms for Saturday, and a few storms may be strong with hail and gusty winds as colder air moves in aloft, contributing to hail production and decently strong updrafts.
Highs again will be in the mid 70s to mid 80s, and some sunny breaks are possible. After a cold frontal passage brings some scattered Sunday showers and storms, temps will cool into the 70s for highs and 50s for lows.
By early next week, fair weather should move back in with lower humidity and highs in the 70s under partly to mostly sunny skies. Have a great week!
