Senior walks (co-sponsored by Guilford Cares and the Guilford Conservation Commission) at 10:30 a.m.:
• Tuesday, June 18 - Sweet Pond: Linda Hecker will lead walkers halfway around the 1.3-mile trail that circumnavigates Sweet Pond and talk about the citizen-based effort to restore the pond after it was drained in 2011. Meet at Sweet Pond State Parking Lot off Sweet Pond Road.
• Tuesday, July 16 - Algiers: Check out this very easy, very short trail that runs from the Guilford Community Church to Partridge Lane. Share ideas for enhancing the trail with Wendy Redlinger, Guilford Preservation Inc., and stop for a coffee or bite at the Country Store. Meet at the Guilford Community Church.
• Tuesday, Sept. 10 - Grassy Spur (aka Sheppie's Meadow), Green River Village: Linda Lembke will talk about the role conservation has played in the history of this meadow and other lands along the Green River, as well as take a look at invasive plant management. Park on the west side of Green River Covered Bridge and meet at the meadow gate, 150 yards east of bridge.
• Tuesday, Oct. 8 - Treasured Trees, Brattleboro: Forester Lynn Levine will guide a walk near downtown Brattleboro to look at trees nominated and described by the Brattleboro community as extraordinary or fascinating. Easy; entire walk is 2.25 miles on paved sidewalks; meet at Guilford Country Store to carpool into Brattleboro. Optional: Lunch together at the store upon return.
Other ongoing activities for Guilford seniors include:
• Tai Chi classes for fall prevention. Classes meet Mondays at the Guilford Community Church, 11 a.m. to noon, and Thursdays at the Broad Brook Community Center (the former Grange building at 3940 Guilford Center Rd.), 10 to 11 a.m.
The classes are paced for seniors, combining qigong energy exercises with basic movements. The instructor is Leah Gessner, who is certified by Tai Chi Vermont, Inc. • Thursdays at the BBCC, a partnership between Broad Brook Community Center and Guilford Cares, which includes an Afternoon Hang-out from 1 to 3 p.m., to enjoy coffee and a snack while visiting, playing cards and board games, and crafting.
• The Guilford Cares Food Pantry, as always, is open Thursdays at BBCC, from 5 to 6 p.m., to all in need of supplemental food.
