Crowell Gallery presents the art of Donald Fitzpatrick

NEWFANE — The Crowell Gallery at Moore Free Library presents an exhibition by Donald Fitzpatrick, “Pendulum Autographs - Drawing with Harmonic Motion,” during the month of May. An artist reception will be held on Saturday, May 4, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

According to a news release, the exhibit explores “the relationship between artist and machine.” Fitzpatrick's Pendulum Autographs are expressions of the frequencies and movement of pendulums on paper.

The drawings in this exhibit were produced using three machines Fitzpatrick designed: a three pendulum rotary harmonograph, a two pendulum lateral harmonograph, and and electro-mechanical drawing machine called a pintograph.

The gallery asks visitors “to consider the many spirals the art of interactive kinetic pendulums produce when applying ink to paper. Ask yourself - is this table fitted with a drawing machine as much a tool as paint brush, ink pen, or camera lens?”

A harmonograph will be set up in the gallery throughout the month of May and Fitzpatrick will be available at the May 4 reception to discuss the origin and features of this creative medium.
