BRATTLEBORO — The town will add new convenience features to the parking system in response to a parking survey that revealed the public's wish for the town to accept credit and debit cards.
The work to install 196 new meters and 15 new kiosks begins this week.
The new equipment - a $275,000 investment approved by the Selectboard last summer - will allow the public to pay for parking using a credit/debit card, using an app on their smart phone. Coins can also be used.
All on-street single-space meters, such as those on Main and High streets, will be swapped out this week.
The kiosks in the surface parking lots will be replaced with new Smart Parking kiosks beginning Tuesday, Jan. 29. This transition is also expected to take three days.
There will be no charge for parking in a lot on the day that work is being performed there. Signs will announce work taking place there.
Users can download the Park Smarter app from Google Play or the iOS App Store.
With this transition, the town is phasing out smart cards, its existing system for prepaid parking on cards that can be used in the soon-to-be-removed meters.
If you have a smart card and would like a refund for the remaining value, visit the Parking Enforcement Office at 77 Flat St.
