Good day to you, hearty southern Vermonters! We have entered an active winter weather week in southern Vermont. Between Arctic cold, windy conditions at times, and two winter storms on the way, there's lots to talk about, so let's jump into the details!
For Wednesday, we'll have a low pressure system passing well to our north along the international border. As this moisture-starved storm tracks west to east, it will drag a cold front through the region by Wednesday afternoon.
This will kick off some snow showers at times, especially in the high terrain. While coatings are possible, little if any accumulation is expected, especially in valley locations along the Connecticut River.
Expect highs in the upper 20s to low 30s. After the cold front moves through, lows will plummet to the low single digits. With westerly winds gusting to 25 mph during the day and into the evening, be sure to bundle up if you're heading out late at night!
For Thursday, high pressure noses into the region briefly and brings us a partly sunny day with highs cresting near 20 degrees. Lows will drop into the teens as we cloud up in advance of our incoming Friday storm.
For Friday, a fairly weak storm system will track from the lower Ohio Valley to near Cape Cod, bringing widespread light to (at times) moderate snow for southern Vermont.
Generally, 2-4 inches can be expected by Friday afternoon when the storm moves out of the region. Highs will reach the upper 20s with lows in the low teens.
While Saturday may start with some sunny breaks, clouds should build back in quickly, and snow showers may reach Windham County before sunset.
This is a tricky storm set up as of this writing. Two systems, one in the northern jet stream and one in the southern jet stream, will try to phase.
Right now it looks like we'll have a snowy onset into Saturday night with a change to sleet and freezing rain for Sunday, and then back to snow before it ends Sunday night.
This could cause power outage and travel problems. If it stays all snow, we could see up to a foot or even more! I will try to update The Commons' Facebook page as we get closer.
Monday should be very cold behind this system with highs only in the low teens! Temperatures will rise by mid-week with fair weather. Have a great week!
