2019 dog licenses now available
BRATTLEBORO - Brattleboro dog and wolf-hybrid licenses are available for the 2019 licensing period. Vermont dogs and wolf-hybrids 6 months and older must be licensed on or before April 1.
Renewal licenses may be obtained in person at the Town Clerk's office, through the mail, or online at www.brattleboro.org. Dogs licensed in Brattleboro for the first time may be licensed in person or through the mail by printing the license form from that website.
Vaccination against rabies is required by Vermont statutes before licensing. If an animal has been spayed or neutered, the certificate issued by the veterinarian must be presented when licensing the animal for the first time. A current rabies certificate issued and signed by a veterinarian must be filed with the Town Clerk.
The licensing fees, due by April 1, are $19 for neutered animals and $23 for unneutered animals. Specially trained assistance dogs may be eligible for a reduced licensing fee.
Dogs and wolf-hybrids licensed after April 1 will be charged a penalty. In addition, any person failing to license a dog or wolf-hybrid may be fined up to $100 and the dog or wolf-hybrid may be impounded. If an animal licensed last year has died or been given away, contact the Town Clerk's office at 802-251-8157, Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
BUHS Band presents chamber ensembles concert
BRATTLEBORO - The Brattleboro Union High School music department will present an evening of instrumental chamber music on Thursday, Jan. 10. The concert will take place in the Brattleboro Music Center auditorium on Blanche Moyse Way at 7 p.m.
Featured on the concert will be 15 chamber ensembles, including groups such as saxophone quartets, clarinet and flute ensembles, percussion ensembles, brass ensembles, a mixed wind trio, a low brass choir, and a string quintet. Music will range from the Baroque era through contemporary music.
The concert is the culmination of a unit in which the 55-member band is divided into smaller ensembles that often rehearse independently. They receive coaching from outstanding area musicians and teachers, some of whom are BUHS Band alumni.
Coaches have included Gideon May (BUHS '16), Kyra Johnston (BUHS '16), Ian Epstein (BUHS '16), Rob Freeberg, Moby Pearson, Michelle Liechti, Kathy Andrew, and Alison Hale. For more information, call 802-451-3511.
Woodland Association presents 'Walk in the Woods: Tracks & Trees'
DUMMERSTON - Join Lynn Levine for a workshop on Saturday, Jan. 12 (bad weather day is Jan. 13) from 1 to 4 p.m. in the woods of the Nature Conservancy on Black Mountain, a unique geological treasure located in Dummerston.
Participants will learn to think like the animals they are tracking and connect with the forested landscape, which includes Red Cedar Relics. Also, Levine will give tips on identifying trees in the winter. Participants should dress for the outdoors and bring snowshoes.
Inside Levine's house, participants will be able to learn more from her collection of scat and fur.
For the last 40 years, Levine has been an environmental educator, tracker, and consulting forester. Lynn has taken thousands of people into the forest. All workshop participants will be provided with their own copy of Lynn's book, Mammal Tracks and Scat: Life-Size Pocket Guide.

Community supper served in Guilford
GUILFORD - The Broad Brook Community Center is hosting a Guilford Community Supper to celebrate the new year and welcome the community to the recently renovated community building (formerly the Grange Hall).
The supper is scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 12, from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m.
The menu will feature beef and vegetarian chili, salad, cornbread/gluten-free cornbread, apple crisp, and cold and hot drinks. Local musicians will provide live music.
