NEWFANE — The Crowell Gallery at the Moore Free Library in Newfane has announced an exhibit of their outstanding collection of contemporary southern Vermont artists.
The gallery, housed in the Moore's renovated 1890s barn at the back of the library, was restored by local artists Dan and Gray MacArthur in 2002.
Robert L. Crowell served as a trustee of the Moore Free Library from 1976 to 2001, five of those years as president of the Board. As the Library's primary benefactor, he funded scholarship programs, literacy awards, and Library renovations. He died in 2001.
Aside from his sponsorship of the Moore Free Library, Crowell is remembered for many other generous acts to the Newfane community.
They include a library addition for the NewBrook Elementary School, a yearly nursing scholarship through the Valley Health Council, a scholarship for Newfane and Brookline residents who plan to attend college, a restoration of Union Hall, and the planting and maintenance of many village trees.
He has also donated undeveloped land to conservation organizations. His many gifts will continue to enrich the village for years to come.
The Crowell permanent collection is on view in January and February. From March through December, the gallery hosts changing exhibits.
