Good day and Happy New Year to you, fine readers of Windham County! I hope that 2019 is a year of connection, success, growth, and the simple peace and joy that comes from appreciating the little things with which we've been blessed in this up-and-down life we continue to live. I'm wishing you all the best!
As for the next week, we will enjoy fair weather this Wednesday and Thursday before we have to deal with another storm system that will eject out of the southwest and make a beeline for the northeastern U.S.
Where it tracks exactly will play a part in how much wintry precipitation we will receive in southern Vermont, but I do believe a mix of snow, ice and rain is on the way.
The weekend following our late-week storm looks seasonable and reasonable, which is to say, lacking storminess, save for a few snow showers on Saturday as an upper low swings through the region.
By early next week, I think we are going to turn colder, and there is some concern that we'll see some winter weather by the middle of next week. Having said all that, let's jump into the details!
For Wednesday, high pressure noses in from the west and, based on its position, will allow for a northerly flow to drop our high temperatures into the mid to upper 20s, with lows in the teens. It will be mostly sunny and we can expect a light northwesterly wind.
For Thursday, high pressure moves off to the east, and puts us in a milder flow with a southerly component, which allows highs to rise into the low to mid 30s under partly sunny skies early, and then mostly cloudy skies late. Lows will dip into the 20s as the cloud deck thickens.
For Friday, we've got a mixed bag of precipitation to manage. I think during the day we should deal with periods of mixed rain and snow with highs well into the 30s. However, depending on the low's eventual track (along with an expected increase in precipitation intensity), we could see a shift to snow and ice Friday night with light accumulations possible, especially in the western part of Windham County.
For Saturday, an upper low swings through and kicks off the lake effect snow machine, so a few snow showers are possible with highs in the 30s and lows in the 20s.
We can expect calmer and more fair conditions on Sunday with similar temperatures. Early next week appears to be getting colder with the potential for a winter storm by next Wednesday. Have a great week!
