The State Board of Education announced its decision on Nov. 30 to create two new Windham County modified unified union school districts (MUUSD), supplanting seven town school districts. An eighth town district was ordered to merge with a recently established MUUSD.
According to the BOE's Final Report of Decisions and Order on Statewide School District Merger Decisions, the current town school districts will be disbanded by July 1, 2019.
• Windham Southeast Unified Union School District created, replacing four town school districts: This new district will provide prekindergarten-through-grade-12 education for students from Brattleboro, Dummerston, Guilford, and Putney. The schools within this new district are assigned to the Windham Southeast Supervisory Union.
• Windham Northeast Union Elementary School District, created, replacing three town school districts: This new elementary school district will provide education for students from Athens, Grafton, and Westminster in prekindergarten through grade 8. The schools within this new district are assigned to the Windham Northeast Supervisory Union.
• Windham School District ordered to merge with newly created WRMUUSD: Windham is added to the West River Modified Unified Union School District if “a majority of voters” of the West River District approves Windham's inclusion. (See main story.) If added, Windham School District will become part of that pre-kindergarten-through-grade-12 education system.
