NEWFANE — Artist Mohammed Daoudi presents “Aches, Pains and Happiness on Paper” at the Crowell Gallery at the Moore Free Library, 23 West St., through the month of December.
An opening reception will be held on Saturday, Dec. 1, from 4 to 6 p.m.
Daoudi was born in 1958 and grew up in Tangier, Morocco. After graduating from high school, he attended Skidmore College and Columbia University.
In 1985, he moved to Seattle, where he decided to make art the main focus of his life. Ten years later, Daoudi and his wife, Marcia, moved to East Dummerston, where he continues to make art.
As a self-taught artist who was brought up as a Muslim, is married to a Jewish woman, and lives in the West, Daoudi found himself gravitating mostly toward subject matter that delves into such nuanced and complex cultural characteristics.
Daoudi attempts to reconcile these nuances in his work by borrowing and taking from both the Western artistic tradition and the rich Moroccan cultural palette. This approach, as well as the current political climate, manifest themselves in his recent work on canvas and paper.
The artist has exhibited in Seattle, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Massachusetts. His artwork can be found in private collections worldwide.
The gallery is open during the library's regular hours: Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday from 1 to 5 p.m., Thursday from 2 to 7 p.m., and Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
