BRATTLEBORO — The Architecture + Design Film Series, shown monthly in Brattleboro and Burlington, will screen Sabra: The Life and Work of Printmaker Sabra Field (2015) on Wednesday, Oct. 17, at 6:30 p.m. at 118 Elliot in downtown Brattleboro.
Doors open at 6 p.m. Film showings are free and open to all.
Directed by celebrated Vermont filmmaker Bill Phillips, the 57-minute documentary explores the life and career of Vermont-based printmaker Sabra Field.
According to a news release, the film highlights a body of work spanning more than five decades, from Field's most commonly circulated images celebrating New England pastoral motifs to her lesser known explorations of figurative mythology, Italian tableaux, and political inquiry.
Phillips has created a portrait of the printmaker's long and productive life, featuring interviews on how travel, personal tragedy, and life in the Green Mountain State have affected the development of her work over the years.
The Architecture Design Film Series was started five years ago in Burlington. This year, through the generosity of the American Institute of Architects Vermont Chapter and local sponsors, the monthly screenings will also be held in Brattleboro through May 2019.
“For several years now, we have witnessed from afar the success of this series in Burlington. We wanted to bring it down to Brattleboro,” said Brattleboro-based architect Jim Williams, AIA Vermont Chapter board member and architect for the renovations at 118 Elliot.
“We chose to show the films at 118 Elliot,” Williams said, “because the transformation of that dilapidated laundromat into a thriving community gathering space is a vibrant demonstration of the power of good design to effect positive change.”
The selection of diverse films celebrates design in its various forms - architecture, landscape design, graphic design, product design, city planning. The series' website, www.adfilmseries.org, tells the history of the film series and presents film trailers for movies that will be shown this season.
