BRATTLEBORO — In partnership with Sandglass Theater's Puppets in the Green Mountains Festival, Latchis Arts presents a special screening of Jim Henson's iconic film, The Dark Crystal, followed by a question-and-answer session with Cheryl Henson on Wednesday, Sept. 19, at 7 p.m., at the Latchis Theatre, 50 Main St.
Hailed as admirably inventive and renowned for its visual splendor, Jim Henson's The Dark Crystal was released to critical acclaim in 1982. John Engstrom of The Boston Globe has called it “a children's fantasy so enjoyable, imaginative and devoid of cuteness that you want to shake the hand of each individual member of the huge team of collaborators.”
This fully restored re-release of the 1982 masterpiece is being shown ahead of the greatly anticipated release of the prequel, The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance, as a Netflix series.
Jim Henson's daughter Cheryl Henson is president of the Jim Henson Foundation and a member of the Board of Directors of The Jim Henson Company.
From 1992-2000, Henson was the executive producer of the Henson International Festival of Puppet Theater, which won both the Drama Desk and OBIE Awards and is widely acknowledged as having changed the perception of contemporary American puppet theater. She has been president of The Jim Henson Foundation since 1992. The foundation awards grants to artists creating new works of excellence in contemporary American puppet theater.
The Sept. 19 event will also include the screening of several short Dark Crystal fan films, which are interesting in their own right and attest to the film's iconic status. To explore the world of the The Dark Crystal at its official site, visit DarkCrystal.com.
