Good day to you, citizens of the verdant Green Mountains and valleys of southern Vermont! We've got one more unusually hot day for late August before we receive another blast of cooler, drier Canadian air into the first half of Labor Day weekend.
However, it's still the Summer of 2018, and as such we will see bouts of warmer conditions into at least early September, if not deeper into the upcoming month. Hopefully, this latest heat blast will be the last of our well-above-average late-summer days.
Luckily, we've turned off the deep tropical moisture tap that drenched the region earlier this season. Still, some showers and thunderstorms are possible with our cold frontal passage during the first half of Thursday. Having said that, let's jump into the details! Look out below!
For Wednesday, it's going to be sunny and hot which has resulted in the National Weather Service posting a Heat Advisory for eastern Windham County.
The combination of high temperatures in the low 90s with dewpoint temperatures in the low 70s will create a very hot and humid day with “feels-like” temperatures (a.k.a., the “heat index”) rising into the upper 90s. In other words, stay hydrated and keep cool as much as possible.
Expect clouds to increase Wednesday night with continued high humidity and lows in the low 70s. Some patchy fog is possible late, and isolated showers are possible during the pre-dawn hours of Thursday morning.
For Thursday, a cold front will be approaching the region and will result in scattered showers and thunderstorms during the first half of Thursday, which could last into the mid to late afternoon. Some storms may be strong, with torrential rain and/or strong wind gusts possible.
Highs will rise into the low 80s with clearing by sunset. Lows will drop into the upper 50s with dewpoint temperatures decreasing through the 60s, and possibly down into the 50s by Friday morning as much drier air works into the region for a few days.
Friday and Saturday look beautiful, with drier air, mostly sunny skies, and calm conditions. Expect highs in the mid 70s and lows in the 50s.
By Sunday, high pressure moves east of us, and a southwest flow will redevelop, allowing humidity to rise again, with high temperatures pushing to near 80 degrees.
Sunny skies are still expected for Sunday, but some isolated showers may develop Sunday night and especially on Labor Day as a frontal boundary pushes closer to the region. Highs will rise into the low 80s by early next week as summer holds on into early September. Have a great week!
