BRATTLEBORO — Steve Gerberich, tinkerer extraordinaire behind the Brattleboro Museum & Art Center's current exhibition entitled “Best of 'Springs, Sprockets & Pulleys,'” will give a free hands-on guided tour of his work at the museum on Sunday, June 17, at 2 p.m.
Early in his career, Steve Gerberich created window displays for storefronts in New York City's Soho neighborhood, and he soon became interested in incorporating mechanical systems that would give his work movement.
What followed has been a prolific career in which Gerberich has become well-known for creating sculptures fashioned from a wide array of recycled and repurposed materials. Gerberich has exhibited his work in such diverse venues as Grand Central Station, the Berkshire Museum, and Science World in Vancouver, B.C., among many others.
Gerberich describes his work as “a mixture of 1 cup Duchamp, 3 teaspoons Calder, 2 tablespoons Kienholz, 1/2 cup Cornell, 1 pound Rauschenberg and a sprinkle of Tinguely.”
With his off-beat style, sense of humor, aesthetic, and philosophy, Gerberich creates sculptures that draw the viewer into the action.
“Push a button or spin a crank,” he says, “and these marvels come alive: buzzing, whirring, squeaking, humming, clanking, chugging, flashing, and blinking ... this is analog work for the digital age.”
