Poetry contest urges writers to hit the trail

PUTNEY — Vermont is a place with a literary tradition as rich and evocative as the mountains and streams that serve as the backdrop of the state.

This spring, Antidote Books in Putney and the Putney Mountain Association are holding the Putney Mountain Poetry Contest, seeking poems inspired by the natural landscape of Vermont.

In honor of National Poetry Month, Vermont writers of all ages are encouraged to submit up to three pages (one poem per page or one poem no longer than three pages) of original poetry that digs deeply into the natural world around us.

Three finalists will receive a broadside letterpress print of their selected poem and will be invited to read at a celebratory event at Antidote Books in Putney this summer.

The winner will receive a scholarship to attend a poetry workshop at Antidote Books in July and will have a broadside of their winning poem displayed at the Putney Mountain trailhead for the summer and fall.

Submissions can be emailed as an attached document to [email protected] before June 30. The contest will be judged blindly; please don't put your name on the submission document, but do include your name, town of residence, and contact information in the email itself.

The Putney Mountain Association is an all-volunteer organization established in 1946 that works to preserve and manage land on Windmill Ridge through donations, grants, and memberships. Antidote Books, founded in August of last year by Ruth Rodriguez and Jeremy Sowell, is an independent bookstore on Main Street in Putney.
