Milder weather, with some showery periods, as spring is slow to arrive

Good day to you, southeastern denizens of the Green Mountain State! After a very cold, stormy and snowy month of March, our pattern has finally changed.

This is because the large area of high pressure that acted as a blocking feature to our north (which forced storms south of New England) has broken down. The main impact in terms of short-term weather for southern Vermont will involve a warm frontal passage very early Wednesday morning.

This will produce a period of icing which could affect travel Wednesday morning before ice changes to rain. Thereafter, we have a confusing stew of frontal boundaries, low pressure areas and upper level systems that are making the week ahead look particularly murky.

There will be periods of snow and rain at times, and while I'm not overly confident I will do my best to explain further in the dailies below.

For Wednesday, our warm frontal passage will be underway. With lows in the mid to upper 20s, precipitation will fall in the form of sleet and freezing rain for a time, and even snow in the highest mountain elevations. Slippery travel is possible, so give yourself extra time.

Any ice should change to plain rain showers late in the morning. Skies will be generally be cloudy with highs in the mid 40s and lows in the mid 30s.

For Thursday and Friday, the potential for scattered showers will continue with mostly cloudy skies and highs in the upper 40s to low 50s each day, and lows in the low 40s Thursday night and even colder down near freezing for Friday night.

As a cold front works through the region, low pressure may develop along it and produce mixed rain and snow showers during the pre-dawn hours of Saturday morning. We should enjoy partly sunny periods during the weekend, with highs in the 40s and lows in the upper 20s. However, some mixed showers of rain and snow are possible.

By early next week, even more scattered rain and snow showers are possible, as inclement weather continues to be possible. We may be cooling down by the middle of next week as well, as spring is slow to fully arrive.
