Mild weather settles in, may linger through month

May the day you read this column feature all manner of serendipitously supportive happenings and positive transpirations in your life.

In other words, I hope you have a good day!

As for southern Vermont's sensible weather, we are in a very mild pattern for the remainder of February as it looks now. Aside from some rain and snow showers Thursday night into Friday morning, and some rain showers early next week, we've got fairly pedestrian weather ahead. Let's jump into the details!

For Wednesday, the flow will turn to the southwest as cold high pressure moves off to the east of our region. Highs will reach the mid to upper 30s, with a few 40 degree readings possible. Skies will be partly to mostly sunny, and lows Wednesday night will dip into the low 30s as clouds increase due to the approach of a warm front.

For Thursday, we may see some isolated rain or snow showers early in the morning. Otherwise, it will be a mostly cloudy day with highs in the mid 40s.

As the day wears on, we'll be watching a wave of low pressure scoot east toward our region, as it rides along a cold front. By Thursday night, this little storm will move through with a mix of rain and snow showers that will last into Friday morning with lows near freezing.

For Friday, any mixed morning showers should quit, as colder air moves into the region behind the cold front. Northwest winds should pick up and gust over 20 mph or so at times, and skies should remain mostly cloudy. Highs will crest in the mid to upper 30s, but will drop as the day wears on. In fact, by Friday night, lows will drop into the single digits!

The weekend was looking cold and dry, with plenty of sunshine, until I saw some recent model runs as I was writing this column. The potential exists for a sneaky coastal storm to get close enough to affect us. If the track comes further northwest, it could take advantage of the weekend's fresh shot of cold air, as well as the colder nighttime temperatures.

Highs on Saturday will reach the mid to upper 20s with lows in the teens. Highs on Sunday will reach the mid 30s with lows in the 20s. If the storm hits, it will arrive Saturday night and move out sometime on Sunday.

By early next week we will see mild conditions return with highs in the 40s and 50s and showery conditions. Have a great week!
