Good day to you, folk of the southern Green Mountains! If you're picking up the paper on its publish date (Wednesday, Feb. 7), it is most assuredly snowing in your neck of the woods. We've got heavy snow on the way this day, with up to a foot or more in some locations in Windham County.
In addition, we can expect more light snow on Friday as a Clipper system moves through, then a period of mixed snow and ice Saturday night, possibly changing to rain or remaining as ice on Sunday as we get into some milder temperatures into next week.
With all that said, let's jump into the details!
For Wednesday, Winter Storm Warnings have been posted by the National Weather Service in Albany, N.Y., for Windham and Bennington counties in southern Vermont. Snow will start mid- to late-morning, and then quit by midnight. Highs on Wednesday will be in the mid-20s, with lows in the teens.
As for the storm setup, low pressure will be tracking east-northeast out of the Ohio Valley. Since this system originated in the southern U.S., this storm tapped Gulf moisture, so its loaded up and ready to produce. As it tracks into Pennsylvania, it will redevelop south of Long Island and track over southeast Massachusetts.
With antecedent cold air in place, and high pressure to our northeast, we should remain all snow. It's possible that some sleet does mix into southern parts of the county.
For this reason, we can expect anywhere from 6-12 inches of snow, with some areas getting over a foot. If it remains all snow, we can expect the storm to produce accumulations in the higher end of that range.
For Thursday, high pressure will move in briefly, bringing breezy northwest winds, mostly sunny skies, and highs in the low- to mid-20s with lows in the single digits under cloudier skies.
For Friday, an Alberta Clipper system will swoop in from the Great Lakes and bring a period of light snow or snow showers during the day and into at least part of the evening with additional light accumulations of a coating to 3 inches possible. Highs will again be in the low- to mid-20s with lows in the single digits.
For Saturday, we should have a milder day with highs in the low 30s and lows in the upper teens to low 20s. Partly sunny skies should start the day, with clouds increasing and snow showers developing later in the day and night with additional light accumulations possible.
This is due to another low pressure system moving east-northeast through Pennsylvania and into New England.
For Sunday, any snow showers should change to rain showers in the lower elevations with highs well into the 30s and lows in the 20s. Early next week looks fair and sunny, with highs in the mid 30s.
