Good day to you, fine folks of southeastern Vermont! After our generally milder temperatures over the past few weeks, it appears that we are witnessing another pattern change with a reversion back to winter conditions by the first and second weeks of February.
On a macro-scale, a large ridge that should extend to the North Pole will form near Alaska. This feature will help to drive much colder air pooling in northern Canada southward into the regions of the Great Lakes, Midwest, and Northeast.
This looks to last through February into at least early March, allowing for colder and stormier times on the horizon. But enough about the big picture - let's dial things in for southern Vermont over the next week!
For Wednesday, a brief period of high pressure moves through the flow. This will provide for partly sunny conditions early, although clouds will increase late in the day. Highs will be in the mid 20s with a light southwest wind.
By Wednesday night, southwest winds will pick up a bit, and we'll be watching a warm front associated with low pressure moving through north of New York state. As warmer air overruns colder air, some scattered snow showers should break out across Windham County into Thursday morning. Lows will be in the low 20s, and some coatings will be possible.
For Thursday, snow and rain showers should wind down by late morning into early afternoon. We will warm briefly into the upper 30s for highs in advance of an approaching cold front that passes through by Friday morning, which will kick up more snow showers as it passes through. Additional light accumulations are possible.
Thursday night lows will be in the low 20s, and there's a low chance that an area of low pressure will develop along the approaching cold front and amplify the energy to produce more substantial accumulations.
For Friday, that system clears out and colder, Arctic air advects into the region under mostly cloudy skies. Highs will be in the upper teens and lows 20s, with lows in the single digits. Saturday looks mostly sunny with highs in the upper teens and lows in the mid teens.
Another Clipper system brings snow showers Saturday night into Sunday, and yet another southern system may bring a chance for even more snow into Monday. Expect cold temperatures with highs in the 20s into next Tuesday. Have a great week!
