Good day to you, southern Vermonters! After an icy, rainy and foggy start to the work week, we will be enjoying colder yet fair weather for the current mid- and late-week period.
Thereafter, we will see a return of milder weather and a chance for rain by Sunday into early next week that may end as a period of snow as the storm departs. This changeable weather looks to be our meteorological lot in the short term, with signals indicating a return to colder, more wintry days by early February. With that said, let's jump into the details!
For Wednesday, we will start off on the cool side with highs cresting around the freezing mark. Mostly sunny skies should develop in the wake of our departing low pressure system. In addition, westerly winds will kick up as the low pulls away, and should gust to 30 mph or so at times. For Wednesday night, lows will plummet into the high single digits with slackening winds.
For Thursday, we will sit squarely within the coldest part of our upcoming Arctic blast. Highs will only reach the low 20s with lows in the single digits. At least we'll enjoy mostly sunny skies! Winds will pick up and gust to 20 mph out of the northwest at times in the wake of the passage of an upper level low.
For Friday, we'll enjoy one more fair weather day as high pressure moves to our south and begins to scoot east off the Mid-Atlantic coast. Expect mostly sunny skies with highs in the mid 20s and lows in the teens.
By Saturday, high pressure will be positioned to our southeast and, with its clockwise circulation, will generate a southwesterly flow that will bring milder temperatures into our region. Highs should reach the low 40s with lows down near the freezing mark.
Another difference from the late-week period is that clouds will be slowly increasing as a frontal boundary approaches southern Vermont.
By Sunday morning, we should see a period of showery weather taking up residence, although high temperatures will still be mild and reaching the low to mid 40s with lows in the mid 30s, with a continued chance of rain.
For early next week, another low pressure system may round the bend of an approaching upper level trough and either track right over us bringing heavy rain with flooding possibilities or, if it tracks slightly east, we could see a rain-changing-to-snow setup developing with temperatures cooling off a bit.
