Guess what? I hope today is a good day for you, or that at least one good thing happens in your life today that makes you smile. Guess what again? Winter cold is on the way, accompanied by some snow chances too!
The large-scale patterns have now shifted and caused the overall flow across the United States to slow and buckle. What does that mean?
It means that when the flow slows down, and simultaneously becomes more south-to-north in orientation (rather than west to east), it allows for cold air to dump south out of the Arctic more readily. This setup also favors the classic southwest to northeast coastal storm tracks necessary to produce snowstorms in southern Vermont.
We've got at least three chances for snow over the next week, though the first two are very low chances with light snowfall potential nearest the Connecticut River Valley.
The third shot, for next Tuesday, could be the first real accumulating snowfall of the season. Let's dive into the details!
For Wednesday, a cold front will be exiting the region. Any morning rain showers may briefly turn to snow as cold air moves in the back end of this system. West and northwest winds could gust to 30 mph or so as colder rushes in, and high temps will be realized in the morning, and fall through the day, from the upper 30s to the low 20s at night as skies clear.
For Thursday, we've got high pressure moving in which will foster mostly sunny skies. High temps will struggle to get above the freezing mark as cold air settles in. Lows will be in the upper teens to low 20s.
The Friday through Sunday period is uncertain. We will most likely see partly sunny skies each day with increasing clouds both Friday and Saturday nights.
Two waves of low pressure will try to impact New England and cause light snow to fall, but we are more likely to stay dry in southern Vermont. Highs will be in the low 30s with lows near 20 all through the weekend.
By early next week, as Arctic air reloads over the region, we could see a more substantial snowstorm develop Tuesday into Wednesday, so stay tuned to The Commons Facebook page, and my own, for updates as the new season begins to take shape over southern Vermont. Have a great week!
