BELLOWS FALLS — WOOL 91.5 FM, community radio for Vermont and New Hampshire, will hold its 10th annual Silent Auction and Flea Market on Friday, Nov. 17, from 5 to 8 p.m.
The event, held at the station's broadcast studios at 33 Bridge St. in Bellows Falls, features art, antiques, household goods, furniture, gift certificates from area businesses including shops and restaurants, and many gift items - some for only $1.
Enjoying its 12th year on the air, WOOL, also known as Black Sheep Radio, is currently the largest full-power community station in New England. It is supported by memberships, underwriting, and fundraisers, of which this annual auction is a primary component.
“Every year, our auction brings not only a major contribution to our operating costs,” said Bill Holtz, WOOL President and area architect, in a news release. “It also brings us new members who have been attracted by the amazing deals the auction offers.”
At a silent auction, bidders using an anonymous number list their bids on a sheet associated with the item and then write a higher bid as other bidders surpass the original. There's suspense and excitement as the bidding goes higher. When the bell sounds at 8 p.m., the highest bidder wins the item, often for an unexpectedly low price.
In past years, the event has featured vintage guitars, original artwork by area painters and sculptors, bedspreads, tables, chairs, sought-after services by local professionals, and gift certificates from regional restaurants. As always, there will be snacks and refreshments, and the whole spectacle is something of a party atmosphere.
This year, the Bellows Falls Farmers' Winter Market will take place concurrently in the big room at 33 Bridge St. The market will have fresh fall produce, breads, jarred goods, local crafts, and much more. Stage 33 Live will provide musical entertainment.
