Good day to you! We had quite the windy rainstorm yesterday, thanks to a deep trough in the eastern U.S., and a stubborn ridge over the western Atlantic Ocean that produced rain and wind for the region.
For the record, troughs are large atmospheric areas that feature lower pressures aloft descending closer to the surface as compared with an average height. Conversely, ridges are large atmospheric areas that feature higher pressures aloft ascending away from the surface as compared with an average height.
Troughs foster the development of low-pressure systems that generate rain, snow, and generally stormy weather over southern Vermont. So when I talk about troughs or ridges, I am referring respectively to inclement or fair weather, in general terms.
You might be thinking “Okay, enough with the weather education, Dave! Let's get to the weekly weather outlook!”
For Wednesday, the cold front that helped to propel yesterday's rain and wind through southern Vermont will translate east of the region today. Still, scattered showers will be possible, especially during the first half of the day. Cooler air will begin to work into the region, so expect highs only in the upper 50s to low 60s today. For tonight, lows will drop into the mid to upper 40s with isolated showers still possible.
For Thursday, the upper low will lift northeast across the region and will generate additional scattered showers during the day and evening. It should be mostly cloudy with highs in the low 50s and lows in the upper 30s as autumn deepens its grip over Windham County.
For Friday and Saturday, a brief period of high pressure will build into the region, which will allow for partly to mostly sunny skies and highs in the mid to upper 50s on Friday and into the low 60s on Saturday. Lows will be in the mid 40s for both nights, with fair weather in control through the first half of the weekend.
For Sunday and Monday, our recent trough-in-the-east pattern will reload, and likely produce more rainfall in southern Vermont. In fact, some of the highest elevations could see some snowflakes before this system departs. Highs look to generally be in the 50s with lows in the 30s and 40s.
We may clear out by Tuesday, but the first big step down into deeper autumn will be complete. Highs look to be in the 50s well into next week. And speaking of weeks, have a great one!
