MARLBORO — Marlboro Music's fourth weekend of concerts at Marlboro College offers 21 resident artists in diverse programs that offer works by Debussy, Dvorak, Shostakovich, and Beethoven as well as Unkind Songs for alto and viola with Sara Couden and Kim Kashkashian by Petr Eben, who was a leading Czech composer, and Voices of Angels by 2017 Composer-in-Residence Brett Dean.
It is one of five Dean works being explored this summer, according to a news release.
The Saturday, Aug. 5, 8 p.m. concert opens with Debussy's En blanc et noir for two pianos with Ziaohui Yang and Cynthia Raim, followed by the Dean piece and the Dvorak Piano Trio in F Minor, Op. 65, with Anna Polonsky, piano; Kobi Malkin, violin; and Guarneri Quartet cellist Peter Wiley.
In addition to the Eben, the concert on Sunday, Aug. 6, at 2:30 p.m. includes the Shostakovich Piano Quintet in G Minor, Op. 57, with Xiaohui Yang, piano; Alina Kobialka and Christine Lim, violins; Sally Chisholm, viola; and Sasha Scolnik-Brower, cello.
Closing the program is the great Beethoven String Quartet in F Major, Op. 59, No. 1, with David McCarroll and Itamar Zorman, violins; Helene Clement, viola; and Marcy Rosen, founding cellist of the Mendelssohn String Quartet.
The Beethoven is dedicated to the memory of violinist Ida Levin, a longtime member of the Marlboro Music family, who first participated in 1981 when she was 18. Ida played at the White House with Rudolf Serkin and returned in 2000 and in recent summers to give back to a new generation what she had gained at Marlboro.
She lost her courageous battle with leukemia last November at age 53 but spent her last summer at Marlboro with her young son, Judah.
The final weekend of Marlboro Music's 67th season will offer three concerts: Friday and Saturday, Aug. 11 and 12, at 8 p.m., and Sunday, Aug. 13, at 2:30 p.m. when the program will include Leon Fleisher conducting the Mozart Linz Symphony.
