DUMMERSTON — Your recent article about the impact of the new anti-immigrant agenda on local educational institutions was eye-opening and very discouraging.
The United States was founded by immigrants and almost all of us have ancestors who were immigrants. Immigrants enrich our country in so many ways. They are hard working and entrepreneurial; 40 percent of Fortune 500 companies were founded by immigrants or the children of immigrants.
Some in this administration are forgetting that the fundamental protections embodied in our Constitution and Bill of Rights apply to every person in this country, regardless of citizenship or immigration status.
Windham Country ACLU People Power (see us on Facebook) has chosen to do something positive to show that immigrants are not alone in this struggle. We are attending a naturalization ceremony on Tuesday, Aug. 8 in Rutland, with signs congratulating our newest citizens. They have all lived here for at least five years.
Please join us!
We will be carpooling at 10:30 a.m. from the Putney Park and Ride by the new fire station.
You can sign up at go.peoplepower.org/event/action_attend/7903, or you can simply meet us at the Park and Ride or in Rutland at the Paramount Theatre at 12:30 p.m.
Even the Homeland Security website says: “The United States has a long history of receiving immigrants from all over the world, and local communities play an important role in welcoming and supporting them.”
