Algiers Bridge closed, detours posted
GUILFORD — GUILFORD - The Route 5 bridge in Algiers Village was closed to traffic on July 12 as contractors began work on its replacement.
The contractor, Renaud Bros. of Vernon, has 28 days to complete the work and re-open Route 5 by Aug. 9. According to project information director Jill Barrett, the bridge has been demolished and work has begun on excavating the two bridge abutments.
This week, Barrett said Renaud Bros. will concentrate on the abutments. “They will build a concrete leveling pad on bedrock on the north abutment, begin installing piles at the south abutment and start to place precast concrete abutment pieces that were fabricated at Renaud Bros.'s headquarters in Vernon,” she said.
Travelers to Melendy Hill Road should note that the entrance to Melendy Hill is open, and to not use the private driveway adjacent to the church to access Route 5.
Broad Brook Road is closed to through traffic, and Barrett said the towns of Guilford and Vernon have posted signs for a local detour route, and signs have been posted on Interstate 91 for a Route 5 detour from Exit 1 in Brattleboro to Exit 28 in Bernardston, Mass.
