‘Garden of Delights’ grows at Mitchell-Giddings

BRATTLEBORO — Mitchell-Giddings Fine Arts, 183 Main St., presents Garden of Delights, an exhibition of wire mesh sculptures by Eric Boyer.

An opening reception will take place Thursday, June 22, at 5 pm, with an artist talk on Saturday, June 24, from 5 to 7 p.m., according to a news release.

Boyer says he began exploring in wood, ceramics, and metalwork, and his work in wire mesh is the result of a continuous search for a personal, expressive medium, which he discovered accidentally while working with metal scraps in a blacksmith shop.

“An exhibit entitled Garden of Delights seems guaranteed to conjure up images of Hieronymus Bosch's surreal masterpiece, and though my work in wire mesh isn't derivative thereof, it helps explain some of the juxtapositions I'm presenting,” he said in his artist statement.

“When I explain how I got from sculpting exclusively representational figures, to abstract, geometric forms, I start with a simplistic stated goal - I sought to learn more about the material,” he added. “One needs to experiment in order to break down assumptions, old habits, and safe patterns, to break one's own rules.”

Garden of Delights represents more than 20 years of artistic creation and reflects Boyer's fascination with figure, form, and the endless expressive potential found in the intimate connection to one's materials.

“Occasionally the figures have a story to tell,” Boyer says, “yet the wire mesh itself is a material with no foreseeable limits as an artistic medium.”
