BRATTLEBORO — On Saturday, June 24, Latchis Arts presents “Michael Talking Meryl: A program featuring The New Yorker writer, editor, and Meryl Streep biographer, Michael Schulman.”
Schulman will join Latchis Arts for a special afternoon dedicated to the celebrated actress Meryl Streep. A 4 p.m. screening of Kramer vs. Kramer (1979) will be followed by a talk led by Schulman, who will discuss his biography of Streep and share stories from his life as a writer and editor at The New Yorker.
There will be a chance to meet Schulman and talk further during a dinner reception at Duo Restaurant after the screening of the film. Admission is by a suggested donation of $10.
Schulman works at The New Yorker, where he is the theater editor of “Goings On About Town” and a frequent contributor to the “Talk of the Town” section. His first book, Her Again: Becoming Meryl Streep, came out last year and was a New York Times best-seller. His work has also appeared in Vanity Fair, The New York Times, and other publications.
Her Again is an intimate look at the artistic coming-of-age of the greatest actress of her generation, from the homecoming float at her suburban New Jersey high school, through her early days on the stage at Vassar College and the Yale School of Drama, to her star-making roles in The Deer Hunter, Manhattan, and Kramer vs. Kramer.
Schulman brings into focus Streep's heady rise to stardom on the New York stage; her passionate, tragically short-lived love affair with fellow actor John Cazale; her marriage to sculptor Don Gummer; and her evolution as a young woman of the 1970s wrestling with changing ideas of feminism, marriage, love, and sacrifice.
Latchis Arts Board Member Ann Macdonald described in a news release how the event came together.
“A series of coincidences has brought together this special event for June 24. A personal connection with the very talented writer, Michael Schulman, ignited the occasion. He has written a marvelous biography of Meryl Streep.
“Michael graciously accepted the offer to come to the Latchis and talk about the first motion picture in which Streep won an Oscar, Kramer vs. Kramer. I have had a lifelong passion for film. He also will tell us what it's like to be a staff writer and editor for a world-renowned magazine in New York City."
