Voters OK school budget on third try
VERNON — VERNON - After it was rejected, 272-222, on Town Meeting Day, and rejected by a single vote - 128-127 - on April 13, a school budget for fiscal year 2018 was approved by voters on the third try by a wide margin on May 31.
According to Town Clerk Tim Arsenault, the school budget passed, 211-114.
The original FY18 school budget of $4,079,300 was one of 18 school budgets statewide that were rejected by Town Meeting voters. The Vernon budget ultimately was cut twice by a total of $24,500.
As passed last week, the revised FY18 budget is 6.9 percent lower than the budget for the current fiscal year.
Flying American flags in Vernon
VERNON - The Vernon Historians, together with the Vernon Voters Alliance, recently received permission from the owners of the telephone poles in town to install and fly American Flags in Vernon.
Volunteers installed the flags in time to honor Memorial Day. Many of the flags and poles used for the past two years had to be discarded due to wear and damage, and new flags were ordered. These are sturdier versions with spinner poles intended to prevent the tangling issue with the previous flags.
They hope to keep this tradition going each year, and donations are being sought to help cover the cost. Donations can be made to the Vernon Historians, Inc., marked as “Flag Project” and mailed to: Vernon Historians, 567 Governor Hunt Road, Vernon, VT 05354.
Volunteers also are needed to help install and remove the flags each year. Contact Dale Gassett at [email protected] if you would like to volunteer.
Vernon Dam recreation area will see extra patrols
VERNON - Great River Hydro, the new owners of the Vernon Dam Recreation area, have requested that the Windham County Sheriff's Department increase its patrols of the recreation area of Governor Hunt Road.
There also will be enforcement of the recreation area's posted hours of operation: from 6 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. This puts the Vernon Dam recreation area in line with all of Great River's other recreation areas along the Connecticut and Deerfield rivers.
