Algiers bridge work update
GUILFORD — GUILFORD - Last week, the Vermont Agency of Transportation's contractor, Renaud Bros, completed reconstruction of the emergency access ramp located at milepost 5.75, south of Interstate 91 Exit 1 in Brattleboro.
Renaud Bros. paved the ramp to accommodate wider turns by emergency responders who may need to use the ramp while the Route 5 bridge in Algiers is closed for four weeks during reconstruction.
One I-91 southbound lane will be closed during the day and reopened evenings. Travelers on Route 5 may experience brief, periodic delays to allow trucks and equipment access to the ramp area.
Also, the contractor has begun delivering stone to stabilize the banks of Broad Brook in preparation for bridge construction. Motorists should watch for flaggers who will assist trucks driving in and out of the bridge construction site.
Traffic ordinance updated
GUILFORD - Selectboard Co-Chair Gabrielle Ciufredda and Road Commissioner Dan Zumbruski recently reviewed and updated the town's traffic ordinance.
At the May 11 regular Selectboard meeting, Ciufredda announced the changes and submitted the ordinance for her colleagues' approval.
Some of the revisions include moving some of the “45 MPH” signs along Guilford Center Road, updating the caution signs to comply with new terminology, adding load limit signs to some town highways, and placing height restriction signs on the Green River Covered Bridge.
Ciufredda also added language to the traffic ordinance indicating that state statute takes precedence when traffic discrepancies arise.
In a 3-0 vote - with Board Chair Sheila Morse and member Gordon Little absent - the Selectboard approved the updated traffic ordinance.
New conservation commissioner appointed
GUILFORD - The Selectboard appointed Susan Bonthron as the town's new conservation commissioner at the May 22 regular Selectboard meeting.
Bonthron replaces former commissioner David Gessner, who resigned from the position a few months ago.
