Winter fades away

The maples start flowing with a taste of early spring

Hopefully you're having a nice, relaxing moment as you sit down to read this column today. In fact, chances are it will be quite mild when you do, which for most is a spirit lifter, indeed.

Winter has faded into the background for now, as Arctic air is locked up in northern Canada and the Arctic Circle, while a west-to-east mild Pacific flow dominates the eastern United States at least into the early part of next week.

Beyond that as we head into the first half of March, some cold signals still exist and we could yet experience a few more snowy and icy periods before spring shoves its way into our lives once again.

For Wednesday, we could see some early showers of rain or freezing rain to start the day. However, we will be clearing as our overnight warm frontal passage continues north, allowing high temps to reach into the mid to upper 40s. We can expect lows in the mid to upper 30s for a mild night compared to the last few.

Thursday will be the pick of the week, as we enjoy a lovely partly sunny day with highs in the low to mid 50s across southern Vermont. A legitimate taste of early spring will be ours for the taking. Clouds will increase Thursday night with lows either side of 40 degrees.

Friday and Saturday will feature the passage of additional fronts that will bring the chance for showery weather, especially on Saturday.

Another warm front passes through the region with scattered showers possible Friday and Friday night. Highs should reach the low 50s with lows near 40 degrees.

On Saturday, we should see widespread showers. Some downpours and even a thunderstorm is possible as a cold front approaches from the west. This front is associated with low pressure that will pass to our northwest as it moves through the Great Lakes into Canada.

By Sunday into early next week, we should cool back down to seasonable highs for late February, which should be in the mid 30s. Some snow showers are possible by Tuesday night.

Have a great week!
