Milder late week, colder weekend, milder again next week

Happy New Year to everybody who reads these words, and to all of those who don't, because I'm an equal opportunity Happy New Year wisher!

The next two to three weeks especially will feature an atmospheric see-saw of weather conditions and hazards, so expect cool-downs and what I like to call mild-ups, since temperatures in the 40s can't really be classified as “warm.”

Let's jump into the details, shall we?

* * *

For Wednesday, a cold front will be departing the region, even though there won't be any cold air behind it. On the contrary, milder Pacific flow will move into southern Vermont as the day wears on. Still, it could start with breezy conditions, remnant rain showers, and even some patchy dense fog in spots before drier air moves in, resulting in a partly to mostly sunny second half of the day with highs in the low 40s and lows at night near freezing with increasing clouds late.

For Thursday, another “inside runner” will approach. An “inside runner” is a storm that travels not along the coast to our south, but to our northwest, putting us in the warm sector of the storm.

This will introduce more scattered rain showers into the region during the day and into the evening, which could become more steady after noon. This will be the warmest day of this thaw, with highs in the mid 40s! More patchy fog is possible as well. Lows will reach to near freezing.

For Friday, an Arctic front will be cooling us off for the weekend, and while we start what looks to be a partly sunny day with highs in the 30s after some scattered morning showers, we will plummet into the single digits by Friday night!

For the weekend, we will sit back down with highs only in the low 20s on Saturday and upper 20s on Sunday. The weekend will be partly to mostly sunny, but Saturday night we should see clouds and maybe a snow shower as a weak coastal storm passes further to our south.

By Monday, we could have another system approaching which could provide some light accumulating snow that changes to a wintry mix into Tuesday with temps rising into the 30s for highs.

Have a great week!
