SAXTONS RIVER — This fall Saxtons River Cares, after more than a year of preparation, is fully up and running.
The volunteer-led effort offers programs for seniors in the area, including a monthly luncheon and speaker series, professional foot care, flu shots, Meals on Wheels, Tai Chi, computer help, and more. All classes and events, unless otherwise noted, take place at 24 Main St. in Saxtons River, the historic Christ's Church building.
Donna Anderson coordinates Saxtons River Cares, and she said in a news release that they have formed a reliable team of women who shop, cook, serve, and clean up for the monthly luncheons.
“Each person has a job,” Anderson said, “and we decide together about each month's menu. We tend to choose comfort foods like meatloaf, baked potatoes, or lasagna, but we always include a big salad bar with lots of healthy choices for vegetarian and gluten-free folks.”
Each luncheon is followed by a brief presentation by a speaker. On Oct. 21, registered dietitian Barbara Bye will discuss healthy eating strategies for seniors. On Nov. 18, Kathy Leo and the Hallowell Singers will talk about hospice and sing.
During October and November, seniors can learn to prevent potentially debilitating falls by participating in “A Matter of Balance: Managing Concerns about Falls.”
This eight-week course is sponsored by Senior Solutions and led by Neal Carter. It combines instructor-led discussion with exercise to increase strength and balance. Anyone who is concerned about falling, regardless of ability, can participate in this research-based program, which has been offered to over 40,000 people in 39 states.
Additional wellness programs include footcare appointments on the third Thursday of each month provided through the Visiting Nurses Association and an intergenerational tai chi class offered by John Bohannon, with a beginners' class starting in November.
