Weddings

• Emily Millard, daughter of N. Hellon Millard of Ozark, Ala., and Steven L. Millard, also of Ozark, wed James Christian Landenberger, son of Ann C. Landenberger of Williamsville, and Bruce H. Landenberger of Newfane, on Aug. 27. The ceremony was held in the upper field behind the groom's mother's home; the reception followed on the front lawn. Justice of the Peace Richard Marek presided. The bride is a graduate of Carroll High School in Ozark and Troy University; she holds a Masters in Exercise Physiology from Utah State University. The groom is a graduate of Leland & Gray Union High School in Townshend and Middlebury College. Both work in management at the Middlebury Co-op. After a week in Maine's Acadia National Park, the couple returned, with their two dogs, to their homestead in Weybridge, Vt.

• Timothy Allen Marsh, 50, formerly of Weathersfield. Died Sept. 21 at his home in Brattleboro. Born Oct. 11, 1965 in Claremont, N.H., the son of the late Gary J. and Josephine Mae (Lamica) Marsh, he received his schooling in Weathersfield and attended Springfield High School. He was employed at Hodgdon Brother's Salvage Yard in Ascutney for several years, and later worked using his creative skills at various jobs. He had lived in Bellows Falls before moving to Brattleboro, where he had resided for the past 10 years. He was known to be a very generous person and had a wonderful sense of humor and a quick wit. He enjoyed his coffee, listening to music, drawing, building model cars, tinkering with electronics, hunting, and fishing. He was very active and would bike and walk daily. He grew up on a gentleman's farm and loved playing with the animals and riding the horses. He was at home in the great outdoors and spent time in the woods and on the water. He had a big heart and was liked by everyone whom he came into contact with. He enjoyed finding and collecting “forgotten treasures.” He didn't ask for much or want much; he liked his independence and privacy. Survivors include siblings Donna Hryckiewicz and her husband, Henry, of Milton and Gary J. Marsh, Jr. and his wife, Lisa, of Weathersfield. He is also survived by four nieces, two nephews, several aunts, uncles, and cousins, his friend Margaret, and many individuals in Brattleboro whom he considered family. • George W. Nostrand, 68, of Keene, N.H. Died Sept. 21. He was born in Oceanside, N.Y. on July 6, 1948, son of George T. and R. Eleanor (Burmester) Nostrand. He was a graduate of Keene State College and graduated cum laude from St. Louis University School of Law in 1973 and was admitted to practice before the Vermont Supreme Court later that year. He practiced law in Vermont for 43 years and was widely recognized for his legal skills in corporate law, commercial real estate development, and estate and trust planning. He was managing partner in the law office of Salmon & Nostrand of Bellows Falls. The law office was founded in 1960 by Thomas Salmon and became a partnership with Mr. Nostrand in 1977. He was a member of the Windham County, Vermont, and American Bar Associations. He was appointed to the Vermont Professional Responsibility Board in 2003 and served as Chair from 2008-11. The Vermont Supreme Court appointed him to a Joint Advisory Committee in 2010 to consider amendments to the Rules of Professional Conduct regarding investigatory conduct. He loved his community of Bellows Falls and devoted much of his legal career to helping local businesses and organizations. He was a founding member of the Bellows Falls Area Development Corp. He helped establish and became corporate counsel to many local businesses who became major employers in the region. He also served many years as legal counsel to local medical facilities and nonprofit entities. He was director of Bellows Falls Trust Company, 1975-93; president of Rockingham Memorial Hospital, 1983-87; vice president and trustee of New England Kurn Hattin Homes, 1993-2011; founding member and director of the Okemo Mountain School; and director of Health Care & Rehabilitation Services of Southeastern Vermont, 1994-2000. He served as chair of the Rockingham Bicentennial Commission from 1975-84 and was instrumental in preserving the historical character of the Bellows Falls downtown village and the railroad park. He served a number of years as local Justice of the Peace and took great joy in officiating at weddings. He is survived by his sons, George and his wife, Stephanie; Chris and his wife, Amy; and Stephen; his life partner and special friend, Sue Davis Glimenakis and her daughters Alethia Melia and her husband, John, and Stefanie Glimenakis; his brothers, John, Pete, and Tom; his sisters, Stephanie Herlihy, Margery Ladd, Jeanne Brooks, and Mary Kinson; his former wife Susan Nostrand; and many nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his parents and his brother, Bill. Memorial information: A funeral Mass was held Sept. 29 at St. Charles Church in Bellows Falls. • Jennifer I. Patterson, 77, of Macungie, Pa. Died Sept. 29 in her residence. She was the wife of the late William V. Patterson. Born in Birmingham, U.K., she was a daughter of the late John G. and Lillian (Rushton) Millward. She was a hostess for British Airways in the Concorde and Executive Lounges for 12 years before retiring. She was also a reservations specialist for Swiss Air, a stewardess for Pan Am, and was an elementary school teacher in England. After retiring, she enjoyed spending winters in Amelia Island, FL and summers in Guilford. She was a passionate cook, a devoted mother and grandmother, and enjoyed playing board games with her family. Survivors include her sons, Matthew J. Patterson of Macungie and David M. Patterson and his wife, Tia K., of Guilford; daughters Heather J. Aldrich and her husband, Scott, of Park City, Utah, and Gweneth M. Berkowitz and her husband, Jeff, of Jacksonville, Fla; and four grandchildren. She was predeceased by her sister, Dr. Diana Millward. • Carol (Bowman) Powers, 74, of Marlboro. Died Sept. 15 at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H., after a period of declining health. Born Sept. 1, 1942, in Montague, Mass., to the lare Roland and Gladys Bowman, she grew up on Third Street in Turners Falls, Mass., with her five older sisters and she enjoyed swimming in the Connecticut River and causing trouble on the avenue. She completed the eighth grade and was ready to enter the work force. This proved to be a pivotal decision, because she met her soon-to-be husband through acquaintances while working for Alpine Furniture in Montague. After a short courtship, she married Gerald Powers in 1961. They resided in Brattleboro for 10 years before building and moving into their own home on Higley Hill in Marlboro. She was a fun, attentive, and loving parent, as well as a stellar wife. She will be remembered as a prankster and for her love of gags and goofs. For holidays and birthdays, her family and friends would look forward to her creative limericks and witty poetics to accompany their cards. Her devilish smile and laugh was infectious. Although she never learned a second language, she prided herself on her fluency in sarcasm. Even though she was known for and often sought out for her common sense, she made it her personal goal to get her high school diploma and graduated from Brattleboro Union High School in 1996. Later in life, her warmth, generosity and appreciation of her community made her a perfect fit as the welcoming face at Community Action Brattleboro Area, where she worked as the receptionist and was affectionately known as CABA Carol. Most recently, she spent several days a week being the life of the party at The Gathering Place in Brattleboro. She is survived by her children, Seth Powers of East Dover and Sarah Powers of Virginia Beach, Va., as well as three grandchildren and countless nieces and nephews. She will be affectionately remembered by numerous friends and acquaintances as Auntie Carol. May her spirit live on through every life she has touched. • Joan Coughlin Shippee, 85, of Brattleboro. Died Jan. 4, 2016 in Kissimmee, Fla. Born on Sept. 17, 1930 to the late John Leo Coughlin and Louise Robbins Gonyer Coughlin, she loved her family and was a devoted friend. She worked at The Book Press from 1955 to 1998 and was an Avon representative for 30 years. She was a member of the VFW Post 1034 Ladies Auxiliary, the American Legion Post 5 Ladies Auxiliary, and the Eagles #2445 Ladies Auxiliary. She was an active participant in the yearly Walk for Life Relays, and was a member of the Brattleboro High School Class of 1948. She is survived by her daughter, Elizabeth A. Bonnett of Kissimmee; siblings Beverly C. Barnes of Inverness, Fla., Louise C. Stebbins of Townshend, Betty C. Brown of Enfield, N.H., the Rev. Everett Gonyer of North Troy, Vt., and Frank Gonyer of Saxtons River; as well as two grandchildren, a great-grandchild, and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by three sisters and five brothers: Grace Smith, Dorothy Cleveland, Norma Greene, John H. Coughlin, James J Coughlin, Floyd Gonyer, and Harry Gonyer. Memorial information: A celebration of her life was held at VFW Post 1034 on Jan. 18, 2016. On Sept. 17, 2016, Ron Millette and Pastor Pete Millette led a graveside service which was held on at the Meetinghouse Hill Cemetery in West Brattleboro.

• Joan M. Smidutz, 85, of Westminster. Died Sept. 23 at Grace Cottage Hospital in Townshend. She was born Sept. 21, 1931, in Burlington, to Armand and Margaret Lavigne. She graduated from Holy Name High School in Worcester, Mass., in 1949, St. Vincent Hospital in Worcester in 1952, the University of Vermont nurse practitioner program in 1975, and the University of New Hampshire in 1985 with a bachelor's degree in health education. She worked at many hospitals and schools and received several awards in the nursing profession. She was a co-founder of Nurse Practitioner Associates for Continuing Education and served and volunteered in many organizations. Survivors include her husband, William Smidutz, whom she married in 1954; her children James, Nancy, Thomas, Sandra and Mary Jo; 10 grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces. She was predeceased by her parents and her sister, Janet. Memorial information: A funeral Mass was held Sept. 30 at St. Peter's Church in North Walpole, N.H., with burial in Westminster New Cemetery. Donations to either the Brattleboro Walk-In Clinic, Westminster Cares, Kurn Hattin Homes, or Grace Cottage Hospital. Fenton & Hennessey Funeral Home in Bellows Falls was in charge of arrangements.

• David O. Stockwell, 79, of Bellows Falls. Died Sept. 22 at Springfield Hospital. He was born on Nov. 17, 1936, the son of the late Edmund and Racheal (Fuller) Stockwell. He was educated in the Putney school system. He was self-employed as a handyman until his retirement. He enjoyed hunting. He is predeceased by siblings Sherman and Edward Stockwell, June Ross, Martha Snyder, and Dorothy Largena. He is survived by two sisters-in-law, Gladys Stockwell of Putney and Jean Stockwell of Guilford, as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Memorial information: A funeral service was held Oct. 4 at Ker-Westerlund Funeral Home in Brattleboro, with burial in Mount Pleasant Cemetery in Putney.
