BRATTLEBORO — The Root Social Justice Center invites the community to celebrate the Center's third anniversary on Sunday, Oct. 2, from 3 to 7 p.m., at a fundraiser party at 28 Williams St., in the Whetstone Arts Building.
Along with dancing, eating, and drinking, awards will be presented and Root volunteers will share their vision for racial-justice organizing in the community - while also raising funds to keep the doors of this volunteer-run space open. The event is free and open to the public, and donations are encouraged.
The Root provides a physically and financially accessible space to support and bring together communities working for social justice, according to a news release.
Until now, The Root Social Justice Center has been a collectively run office space for justice-oriented businesses and organizations. This will shift in the coming year as the Center invites more people to take part with the hope of becoming a southern-Vermont hub for racial justice organizing, a goal that will be discussed at the party.
Evenings and weekends, the space is available for the public to host social justice organizing events, such as workshops, potlucks, film screenings, and meetings. Some of the groups who use the space regularly are Brattleboro Time Trade, Women's Freedom Center, Green Mountain Crossroads, The Hive, Brattleboro Solidarity, Lost River Racial Justice, and 350.org Mother Up!.
Since the Root opened its doors in September 2013, more than 300 events have been hosted there, the majority of which have been open to the public.
This event is all-ages and wheelchair accessible. Please come fragrance-free. To find more about The Root Social Justice Center, visit www.therootsjc.org or contact them at 802-254-3400 or [email protected].
