JAMAICA — The Jamaica Historical Foundation will host an exhibit about renowned artist Milton Avery and his work inspired by summers spent in Jamaica between 1935 and 1943.
The exhibit will be on view on Saturday, Aug. 6, from 4 to 7 p.m., at the Hefflon House, 3751 Route 30, next to the Jamaica Town Hall.
At 5 p.m., there will be a special lecture by Jamie Franklin, curator of the Bennington Museum exhibit “Milton Avery's Vermont.” The Avery Exhibit at the Bennington Museum is open now through Nov. 6.
Following the lecture, a concert of the Pikes Falls Chamber Music Festival will take place in the Jamaica Town Hall at 7 p.m.
A favorite example of Avery's work from this period in Jamaica is his painting “Crossroads.” Avery painted this watercolor from in front of the historic Rawsonville Schoolhouse, where Route 30 intersects with Route 100 in Rawsonville. It depicts a long vanished general store and a covered bridge between the trees in the background.
