David Emery Sr. appointed as town EMD
VERNON — VERNON - The Selectboard unanimously voted to appoint David J. Emery Sr. as the town's Emergency Management Director, effective July 1, at the June 20 regular Board meeting.
Board Chair Christiane Howe, who recently resigned as Emergency Management Director, said in a news release that she courted Emery for the position.
In accepting, Emery noted Vernon has “a very healthy” emergency management system, “and I just want to enhance it. I welcome the opportunity at this stage of my life to do something for the town of Vernon,” according to the news release.
Emery said he had “some experience“ in town, with the state, and in the field of firefighting “that might be useful.”
That was a slight understatement. Emery served on the Brattleboro Fire Department for 37 years, including 18 years as its chief. During that time, he also worked for seven years as a part-time officer for the Brattleboro Police Department.
After retiring from the fire department in 2007, Emery took a position as a part-time deputy with the Windham County Sheriff's Department. He also works with the state's radiological office and maintains a number of emergency-responder certifications.
In accepting, Emery reported he had spoken with officials in a number of departments, including the fire chief, law-enforcement, and the roads foreman. He noted they, including the Selectboard, are the team working to ensure Vernon's safety.
“If we all think we can work together, then I'd like to do that,” Emery said.
New recycling schedule announced
VERNON - The town administrator has released an announcement about a change to the curbside recycling pickup schedule.
Beginning Aug. 11, recyclables will be picked up every other week. All streets in town, including private roads, have been assigned an “A” or “B” designation. This will determine which week an address gets its recyclables picked up.
To learn if your address is an “A” or a ”B,“ contact the Town Offices at 802-257-0292 or email the town administrator at [email protected].
Trash will still get picked up every week, and all other recycling procedures will continue. Plastics #1 through #7 can go in curbside recycling, and the recycling bin at the Town Garage accepts #1 and #2 plastics.
