• Whitney Marie Lynde of Guilford earned an M.S. in Education from the School of Social Work at Simmons College in Boston.
• Jacqueline Elliott of Brattleboro earned the distinction of Faculty Honors for spring 2016 at the Georgia Institute of Technology.
• Jacob Castine of Vernon has been named to the spring 2016 Dean's List at Roger Williams University in Bristol, R.I.

Transitions
• Tammy Bischof, vice president of operations at Brattleboro Savings & Loan, recently joined 18 other community members in serving on Youth Services' board of directors. Bischof has served before in similar capacities in the region: on the board of American Red Cross in Keene, N.H., from 2001-2003; as vice-chair of the Keene Chamber of Commerce Executive Committee from 2001-2004, and on the West Springfield (Mass.) Chamber of Commerce from 2004-2006. In banking for more than 25 years, Bischof has held positions at New-Alliance Bank in Springfield, Mass., and Granite Bank in Keene to coming to Brattleboro Savings & Loan.
Obituaries
• Stephen Edward Baker, 86, of Brattleboro. Died July 2 at his home. Born in Brattleboro on May 15, 1930, the son of the late James F. Baker and Beatrice (Massey) Baker, he was raised in Brattleboro and went to Saint Michael's Grade School before moving to Dummerston. He then attended The Choate School in Wallingford, Conn.,where he graduated from high school in 1948. Stephen then attended Middlebury College, where he received his Bachelor of Arts Degree in 1952. After college, he served in the Marine Corps from 1952-1954. He was stationed in Japan during the end of the Korean War and was discharged with the rank of captain. He then returned to Vermont and joined the family business, Baker's Inc., in 1956. As CEO, he guided the company's growth and expansion in retail, wholesale and contract furniture businesses over the course of his six-decade long career. Also in 1956, he was married to Jane Murdoch. She died in 2011, after 55 years of loving marriage. He participated in many community activities over the years in Brattleboro. Some of the highlights include the Brattleboro Development Credit Corp., Brattleboro Retreat, Brattleboro Historical Society, Association for Downtown Development, Preservation Trust of Vermont, Experiment in International Living, and the Bank North Group, to name a few. Of his leisure time activities, he was an avid local historian and enjoyed skiing, snorkeling, walking, golf, vexillology (study of flags). and vonchology (study of seashells). He leaves three sons, James F. Baker II of Dummerston, Jonathan S. Baker of Encino, Calif., and Stephen E. Baker Jr. of Oakland, Calif,; one brother, Dennis J. Baker of Dummerston, five grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his wife, he was predeceased by a brother Dudley M. Baker, M.D., and a daughter-in-law, Janet Lee Christy. MEMORIAL INFORMATION: A funeral Mass will be celebrated Saturday, July 9, at 11 a.m. at St. Michael's Catholic Church. Committal Rites and burial will follow the Mass in the Baker plot in St. Michael's Parish Cemetery. • Edward M. Goutas, 73, formerly of Bellows Falls. Died June 19, after a brief illness. He was born Sept. 12, 1942, in Bellows Falls, the son of Nicholas and Ida (Stankiewicz) Goutas. He graduated from Bellows Falls High School in 1960, St. Michael's College in 1964 ,and St. John's University School of Law in 1968. After law school, Mr. Goutas was a New York state parole officer before returning to Vermont to practice law. He opened his own law practice in 1973 in Bellows Falls and later became a probate judge. He enjoyed playing duplicate bridge and achieved the rank of life master. He retired to Florida with his wife, Nancy Holton Divoll. He achieved his first hole-in-one in golf on May 27, 2016, less than a month before his death. He is survived by his wife; sisters Cathy Bergmann of Bellows Falls and Dorothy Chapman of Loudon, N.H.; nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews. He was predeceased by his parents and his brother, John Goutas. MEMORIAL INFORMATION: A funeral will be held at St. Charles Church in Bellows Falls at a later date, with burial at St. Charles' Cemetery. • Bernard T. Greenwood, 91, of Marlboro. Died June 24 at Grace Cottage Hospital in Townshend, following a period of declining health. He was born at home on the Branch Road (Augur Hole Road) in Marlboro on Oct. 2, 1924, the son of the late Bernard and Ethel (Ellor) Greenwood. He was a true Vermonter who loved to hunt and, up until a couple of years ago, was still splitting his winter wood supply. In his earlier years, he was a self-employed logger and later worked as a Union carpenter until his retirement. After retiring, he needed something to fill his time and took up metal detecting. With his daughter Barbara, he covered many miles throughout Southern Vermont and in the Fairlee area, where Barbara and her husband, Wayne, have a camp. He is survived by his children: Barbara Blake of Brattleboro, Russell Greenwood of Townshend, Marlene Streeter of Jamaica, and Kimberly Burwell of Harrisonburg, Va. Additionally, he leaves five grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, eleven great-great-grandchildren, two nephews, and one niece. He also leaves his two cats that he loved very much. He was predeceased by his brother, Ellis Greenwood. MEMORIAL INFORMATION: In keeping with his final wishes, there are no formal funeral services. A private memorial service for his family will be held at a later date. • Ingunn F. “Inky” Hamill, 82, of East Dummerston. Died June 28 at her home in Dummerston. Born June 17, 1934, in Skjånes, Norway, she was the third daughter of Edgar and Julia Fredriksen. She grew up in northern Norway, and came to the United States in 1961, where she met and married John A. Hamill Jr, in Rye, N.Y. They moved to Vermont, where they raised a family. She worked as a mental health therapist at the Brattleboro Retreat for 43 years and retired in 2013. She helped many a patient in her 43 years at the Retreat, while raising two kids. She was an active person, and enjoyed outdoor activities, including skiing, hiking, and boating, and was quite an accomplished bowler, cook, and bridge player. She excelled at anything she did. She will be greatly missed by her friends and family. She is survived by her husband, her son, John III, and her daughter, Kirsten Noel Parsons, as well as a brother and five sisters in Norway. MEMORIAL INFORMATION: Services are planned for Saturday, July 16, at 2 p.m., at Trinity Lutheran Church in Brattleboro, followed by a reception at 3:30 p.m. at the Evening Star Grange in Dummerston Center.
• Lin M. Hozempa (Johnson), 66, of Newfane. Died June 19. Born in Francestown, N.H., on Jan. 23, 1950, to Earl M. Johnson and Marion L. Carlton, she was one of five children. She was married to Raymond J. Hozempa Sr., who died in 2010, and called Newfane their home since 1989. She had a successful career in quality control for various manufacturing companies. In her younger days, she was often found riding her motorcycle all over New England. She was an avid reader, had a great sense of humor, and was so friendly that no one was a stranger to her. She adored her cats, The Bum and Sadie. Before her illness, she could often be found hiking through the woods or kayaking at local lakes. She was a very loving stepmother and will be greatly missed by her beloved stepdaughter Michelle Haryasz and her husband, Michael, of Ludlow, Mass.; stepsons Raymond Hozempa Jr of Hampden, Mass.; Sean Hozempa and his wife, Tami, of Chicopee, Mass.; and Richard Hozempa of Panama City Beach, Fla.; six grandchildren; and sister Arlene Rousseau and her husband, Gary, of Lewiston, Maine. She predeceased by her parents and her sister, Mabel Tindle. MEMORIAL INFORMATION: At her request, she asks that you celebrate her life by being respectful of the Earth and its wildlife. • Myrtle Johnson, 79, of Putney. Died June 23 at home. She was born in Windsor on April 14, 1937 and grew up on a dairy farm in Hartland. She graduated from Windsor High School in 1955. She met Colan Johnson on a hayride, and they were married March 11, 1956. At the time of his death in 2014, they had been married for 58 years. After living in Brookfield and Ludlow, Vt., and Swanzey, N.H., the Johnsons settled in Putney. Together they raised five children, worked in the woods, cared for livestock and went to many competitions with their teams of draft horses. In addition to her work at home and on their small farm, she worked at Putney Paper Mill for a number of years and she drove a school bus. She enjoyed counted cross stitch and other embroidery work, as well as time with her family. She was predeceased by her parents, Jessie and Maurice Eaton, and her only brother, Chester Eaton, and her son, Rodney Johnson. She lived the last years of her life with her son Gordon and his wife, Mary, of Putney. She is also survived by one daughter, Wanita Theriault, and her husband, Andy, of Milan, N.H., and sons Elberton Johnson of Groton N.H., Sy Johnson and his wife, Deborah, of Westminster, and daughter-in-law Deborah Johnson of Northfield, Mass. She loved her 16 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, and her many nieces and nephews. • Michael W. Morton, 60, of Brattleboro. Died June 20. Husband of Pamela Morton for 40 years. Father of Michelle Morton-Kuert and her husband, Daniel, and the late Jamie Morton. Brother of the late Richard Morton. Also survived by three grandsons. Born June 15, 1956, the son of the late Floyd and Geraldine Morton, he lived in Brattleboro for most of his life. At the time of his death, he was doing what he loved the best, which was running the business that he built over 30 years ago, on a full-time basis. Prior to that, Mike worked for Pepsi for over 25 years and was in construction for many years. Family and friends were a huge part of his life. His wife, Pam, was his high-school sweetheart, the love of his life, and his best friend. His daughter, Michelle, shared his love for hunting and cars. He was her rock and confidant. Her husband, Dan, admired Mike, called him Dad right away, and loved working by his side learning not only the trade but also the way he served others. His grandson Logan, who called him Papa, was a constant companion and hunting buddy. Mike was a father to Logan, his best friend, and his biggest fan. He was an active member of the Brattleboro Church of Christ. His passionate service to the Body of Christ and to the community is how most will remember him. His was lovingly known as “The Bread Man,” “The Donut Man,” “The Vegetable Man,” “The Pizza Man,” and “Sport,” just to mention a few. He touched more lives than anyone will ever know. • Bernard G. Record, 77, of Grafton. Died June 28. Husband of Ann (Fisher) Record for more than 57 years. Father of Rodney Record and his wife, Kim, and Russell Record and his wife, Lisa, all of Grafton; and Roxane Carlson and her husband, Peter, of West Townshend. Brother of Robert Record and Sylvia Fletcher, both of Chester, and the late Shirley Fletcher. Also survived by eight grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. Born in Springfield, Vt., on Nov, 13, 1938, the son of the late Gordon and Elvi (Fossi) Record, he worked as a mason tender and for Lane Construction. He was a self-employed mason for many years and also was self-employed in logging and trucking. He served in the National Guard and was a member of the Loyal Order of the Moose in Bellows Falls. He loved family and telling stories. He also enjoyed hunting, snowmobiling, work horses, NASCAR, and 4x4 Jeeping. MEMORIAL INFORMATION: Calling hours are 7 to 9 p.m., on Friday, July 15 at the Fenton & Hennessey Funeral Home in Bellows Falls. The funeral service is Saturday, July 16, at 11 a.m., at the White Church in Grafton, officiated by his son-in-law, Pete Carlson. Burial will follow the service in the Houghtonville Cemetery.
