Springfield Paving wins bid
DUMMERSTON — DUMMERSTON - The Selectboard awarded Springfield Paving the bid for this year's summer paving projects on town highways, at a cost of $59.90 per ton for about 1,100 tons.
At the June 22 regular Selectboard meeting, Board member Steve Glabach told his colleagues that Highway Foreman Lee Chamberlin, who wasn't at the meeting, said he was “pretty comfortable” with Springfield Paving, who had done work for the town in the past, and Chamberlin “was hoping we'd lean that way,” Glabach said.
Fire station donations OK'd by lawyer
DUMMERSTON - According to information provided by Selectboard Chair Zeke Goodband, the town's attorney, Bob Fisher, advised the town it could receive donations for the construction of a new central fire station.
Because the West Dummerston Volunteer Fire Department is an independent entity and not owned by the town, some Selectboard members had questioned whether, and how, the town could collect individual donations.
At the June 22 regular Board meeting, Goodband shared Fisher's advice that, yes, the town can collect the money, that donors should clearly signify the donations are for the fire station, that the donations are tax-deductible, and that when the town turns the money over to the fire department, the Selectboard needs to do so through a warrant.
Taft Cemetery mowing bid awarded
DUMMERSTON - The Selectboard voted to award Travis Bristol the bid for clearing the lot on the north side of the Taft Cemetery for an amount of $6,800.
This bid includes what Board Chair Zeke Goodband referred to as “a turnkey operation.” Bristol will mow the lot, remove the tree stumps, and turn the land into a lawn.
At the June 22 regular Board meeting, Cemetery Committee member Terry Chapman noted the project should be complete next summer after enough time has elapsed for the new grass to grow.
Goodband noted the hard work performed by the Cemetery Committee. Board member Hugh Worden, who also serves on the committee, said Chapman is an especially dedicated member.
