Miracles

BRATTLEBORO — Last week, I was hit with a major health crisis, but thanks to the rapid intervention of the hematology/oncology team in One West at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H., I was able to recover.

I am grateful for the medical miracle that DHMC pulled off - quickly reviving a red-blood-cell production system that suddenly went haywire. The One West staff pulled me through and were unfailingly caring and kind to me and my wife, Joyce Marcel.

But I also saw another miracle last week. I saw the outpouring of concern for The Commons, and the team that puts it together each issue. I saw the generous offers of financial help and in-kind assistance that came from all over.

The support of the community for my co-workers and our newspaper during this crisis was amazing. It was humbling to see how much people cared, and I thank everyone for all the kindness extended to me, to Joyce, and to the people who kept The Commons rolling in my absence.

I hope to be easing back into action in the coming weeks, as my body recovers and my strength rebuilds. And this week, if you ask after my health, I can happily reply, “Much Better, Thanks."
