Firearms sale talks continue
VERNON — VERNON - Since the disbanding of the town's police department, Vernon's Selectboard has been trying to figure out what to do with its cache of firearms and other police equipment.
There is some urgency in selling the equipment. Not only would it bring needed revenue to the town, but many of the weapons are stored in a vault without climate-control - the longer the firearms sit, the more they deteriorate, and their value drops.
Plus, town officials recently learned some of the bullet-proof vests have expired.
At the Sept. 21 regular Selectboard meeting, the board, Secretary Catrina Lawley, and Windham County Sheriff's Department Lt. Mark Anderson discussed options for selling the equipment. Anderson also opened the storage vault during a recess so board members could view the contents.
The board decided to hold a one-day open auction for licensed firearms dealers to buy the entire contents of the vault. Lt. Anderson agreed to do the showing. Lawley agreed to set up a date and contact licensed dealers.
Unlicensed dogs
VERNON - In the town's effort to strongly encourage dog owners to license their animals, the Selectboard voted at its Sept. 21 regular meeting to allow Town Clerk Susan Miller to send the list of dog scofflaws to the Windham County Sheriff's Department for enforcement.
The vote was unanimous, minus Josh Unruh, who was absent.
