VSO premieres work of composer Jennifer Jolley during statewide tour

BELLOWS FALLS — The Vermont Symphony Orchestra (VSO) will premiere the work of composer Jennifer Jolley during its annual Made in Vermont statewide tour.

Her VSO commissioned work, entitled The Ferry Crossing, will be performed in eight towns and villages across Vermont, including the Bellows Falls Opera House on Friday, Oct. 2, at 7:30 p.m.

Made in Vermont marks the beginning of the musical season of the Vermont Symphony Orchestra. Jolley will be with the orchestra throughout the tour to offer remarks and comments.

Urban environments, modes of transit, and nostalgia influence Jolley's compositions and sound installations. She is the co-founder of North American New Opera Workshop (NANOWorks Opera), a chamber opera company devoted to developing and staging short contemporary operas by emerging North American composers. She also authors Why Compose When You Can Blog?, a web log about contemporary composing.

Her work has been commissioned and performed by various soloists and ensembles throughout the United States and Europe, and her articles about composing have been featured on NewMusicBox, an e-zine launched by the American Music Center. This fall, she will have a Pussy-Riot-inspired song cycle premiered by the Quince Contemporary Vocal Ensemble.

Also on the program are two Scandinavian miniatures, and two works featuring the violin. Music director Jaime Laredo solos in Mozart's third violin concerto and is joined by concertmaster Katherine Winterstein for Bach's Double Concerto.
