• At Brattleboro (Memorial Hospital), July 28, 2015, a son, Sanai Alderfer Newal, to Daya and Ray Newal. Grandson of Lauren and Henry Alderfer of Brattleboro and Bebe and Bob Newal of Toronto.

College news

• Keith Walsh of Marlboro earned a place on the Dean's List for the spring 2015 semester at Bard College at Simon's Rock in Great Barrington, Mass.

• Davin Freeman of Vernon was awarded a Master of Business Administration degree and Ashley Watson of Brattleboro was awarded a B.S. in marine science during summer commencement ceremonies on Aug. 8 at Coastal Carolina University in Conway, S.C.

Transitions

• Russell Bradbury-Carlin is the new executive director of Youth Services, a Windham County nonprofit which has been helping young people and families thrive for more than 40 years. Bradbury-Carlin comes to Youth Services from Center for New Americans, an agency that works with immigrants and refugees in Western Massachusetts, where he was the executive director. He previously served as Berkshire Children and Families' assistant director. In that capacity, he focused on several programs that served families involved with the Department of Children and Families in Massachusetts. Before joining Berkshire Children and Families, Bradbury-Carlin served as associate director of the Men's Resource Center in Amherst, Mass. There, he oversaw the MOVE program, a batterer intervention program that was recognized nationally and internationally.

• Dr. Jesper Brickley will begin seeing patients at Grace Cottage Family Health in Townshend starting Aug. 24. He graduated from Western University of Health Science's College of Osteopathic Medicine of the Pacific, and completed his residency at Rose Family Medicine in Denver, Colo. He also completed prerequisite coursework at the New England College of Osteopathic Medicine in Portland, Maine. He earned his B.A. from The Evergreen State College in Olympia, Wash. He practices primary care and family medicine.

• William Wilson has joined the Putnam Insurance Agency as a commercial lines producer. He is a graduate of Green Mountain College, and had been employed at the Grand Summit Resort at Mount Snow for seven years before joining Putnam Insurance. He is active in the local community, both as a youth lacrosse coach and as a member of the Brattleboro Recreation & Parks Board. He, his wife Nina, and their two children live in Brattleboro.

Obituaries

Arlene D. Bates, 95, of Bellows Falls. Died Aug. 13. Wife of the late Floyd Bates. Mother of William and Robert Bates, and Lorraine Yates. Sister of Anson Davis. Also survived by grandchildren Bethany Coursen, Jodi Bates, Jennifer Bania, Jeremy Bates, Jessica Bates, Kevin, Keith, and Ryan Bates; and 12 great-grandchildren. Born in Albany, Vt., the daughter of Irving and Ida (Baird) Davis, she was a graduate of Craftsbury Academy and worked for Woodbury Florists, Saratoga Plastics, Simmons Precision, and Bryant Computer Products. She was also a member of the United Church Women's Fellowship. She enjoyed many years spending time with her family at Crescent Lake. Memorial information: A graveside service was held Aug. 16, in the New Westminster Cemetery.

• Wesley Fred Carrier, 76, of Brattleboro. Died Aug. 8 at Brattleboro Memorial Hospital after a brief illness. Father of Ricky Carrier and his wife, Linda; Kevin Carrier and his wife, Lisa; and Wayne Carrier. Brother of Frances Boyd, Evelyn Berard, Bernice Murdock, and Seraph Stoddard of West Chesterfield, N.H., and the late Edward Carrier and Gladys Boyd. Special companion of Patience Akeley. Son of the late Harvey K. and Esther Ruth (Stark) Carrier and a 1956 graduate of Whitingham High School, he worked at the Book Press in Brattleboro for more than 42 years. His hobbies were bowling and bingo. He was an avid fan of the VFW softball/basketball teams. Memorial information: No memorial services are being planned.

• Normand L. Comptois, 72, of Spofford, N.H. Died Aug. 6 at his residence. Husband of Jean-Ann (Breault) Comptois of Rumford, Maine. Father of Paul Comptois and his wife, Dawn, of Spofford, and the late Spring Robin White. Brother of the late Andre Comptois. Also survived by three grandchildren and a great-grandchild. Born in Coaticook, Quebec, the son of the late Arthur and Evelyn (LaPointe) Comptois, he had been an area resident for more 40 years. He was employed by the Brattleboro Department of Public Works as a grader operator for many years before his retirement. He enjoyed spending time with his family, tinkering in his garage, and working with his excavator. Memorial information: Calling hours were held Aug, 10 at Ker-Westerlund Funeral Home in Brattleboro. • Violetta Goodrich, 76, of Rutland. Died Aug. 13 at Mountain View Genesis Center in Rutland. Wife of the late Zeb H. Goodrich. Mother of John Goodrich of Rockhill, S.C., Robin Newell of Dummerston, and Shannon Gaulin of South Burlington. Sister of Dan Tatro of West Rutland, Shirley Crandall of Rutland, and the late Larry Tatro. Born in Swanton, the daughter of the late Leondose and Lucille (Lemoine) Tatro, she was a former parishioner of St. Peter Church. Memorial information: A funeral service was held Aug. 16 at Clifford Funeral Home in Rutland, with burial in Proctorsville Cemetery.

• Walter Horace Hamilton, 88, of Winchester, N.H., and Lehigh Acres, Fla, Died Aug. 6 at his home. Husband of Mary (Luciani) Hamilton for 70 years. Father of Patricia Plante of Hinsdale, N.H. Grandfather of Seth Smalley of Winchester and Luke Smalley of Stedman, N.C. Brother of Kenneth Hamilton of Burleson, Texas. Also survived by 12 great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. Born in Brattleboro, the son of George and Marjorie (Crossman) Hamilton, he was raised and educated in Brattleboro and was a graduate of Brattleboro High School, Class of 1944. Following high school, he joined the Army Air Corps., serving his country during World War II. He was stationed in Italy in occupational duty. After his honorable discharge, he joined the U.S. Postal Service. He first worked on trains sorting mail, and then on the highway post offices. He was later promoted and served as superintendent engineer in the Brattleboro Post Office from 1973 to 1979. He retired in 1982 as postmaster of Turners Falls, Mass. While postmaster, he worked with the Franklin County Stamp Club to carry out the first ultra-light air mail delivery from Turners Falls to Orange, Mass. in 1981. He and his wife spent winters in their home in Lehigh Acres, Fla. While there, he helped to distribute bread weekly to the needy at Faith Lutheran Church. He also donated his time at the Lehigh Acres Senior Center. He and his wife traveled in their motor home and visited every state. With his wife, he owned Westwinds Gift Shop in Winchester which they operated for 10 years. He was a communicant of Mary, Queen of Peace Parish in Winchester. He was a life member of the Brattleboro Elks, American Legion Post 5 and the VFW of Winchester. He was president of the Southeastern Federal Retirees Association for many years. He was also an honorary member of the Greenfield Stamp Club, a life member of the Brattleboro Stamp Club, past president of the Winchester Kiwanis Club, and a member of the Winchester Historical Society. He also loved to play cards. Memorial information: At his request, there will be no formal funeral service. Burial will take place in Evergreen Cemetery in Winchester at the convenience of the family. Donations to Applewood Harborside Healthcare and Rehab Center, 8 Snow Rd., Winchester, NH 03470. • Philip Roy Howe, 72, of West Chesterfield, N.H. Died at his home. Former husband of Rosealie (Dascomb) Howe. Life partner of Heidi Finnell. Father of Elaine King of Bernardston, Mass., Dwight Howe and his wife, Mary, of Hinsdale, N.H., and Kathryn Lynch and her husband, Leonard of Hinsdale. Brother of Guy Howe and his wife, Dorothy, of Williamsville; Marion Everett of Elizabeth City, N.C.; Shirley Thomas and husband, Chet, of Hinsdale; and the late Stephen, Lelan, Joyce, and Lillian Howe. Born in Newfane, the son of the late Guy and Evelyn Howe, he was educated in local schools and was a 1960 graduate of Hinsdale High School. After graduation, he enlisted in the Air Force and served from 1960 to 1965, attaining rank of Airman 2nd Class as a Jet Engine Mechanic. He was a family man who enjoyed the outdoors, watching his grandchildren play sports, and spending time with his great-grandchildren. He had a big heart and a great love for animals. He was a member of American Legion Post 5 in Brattleboro. Memorial information: A celebration of life will be held in the coming weeks with additional details to be determined. • Barbara A. Wright Smith, 74, of Claremont, N.H. Died Aug. 13 at her home following a long illness. Wife of Kenneth R. Smith, the late Nigle L. Wright and the late Robert Pelton. Mother of Jeffrey Nigle Wright and longtime companion, Donna Curtis of Claremont and Shari Lynn Theriault and her husband, Steve of Claremont. Stepmother of Kenneth Smith Jr. and Douglas Smith. Sister of Karen Golden and her husband, Tom, of Brattleboro; Donna Matthews and her husband, Van of Keene, N.H.; Christine Young and her companion, Nick of Stoddard, N.H.; Michael Martino of California; Joseph Martino and his wife, Daphne, of California; and the late Pasquale Martino Jr. Born in Brattleboro, the daughter of the late Pasquale Martino, Sr. and Dorothy (Burdo) Martino. she was raised and educated in Brattleboro and graduated from Brattleboro Union High School in 1958. She married Mr. Wright in 1960; they were married for 37 years until his death in 1997. She then married Mr. Pelton of Claremont in 2000; he died in 2007. In 2009, she married Kenneth R. Smith of Lebanon, N.H. She worked for Sullivan County Homemaker Service for nine years and later was employed as a switchboard operator for Claremont Savings Bank until her retirement in 2000. She was a member of the Elks Lodge BPOE 879. Barbara enjoyed time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She enjoyed reading, knitting, gardening, her TV shows, and, most of all, the gatherings of the families where many good times were had by all. Memorial information: A funeral Mass was held Aug. 18 at St. Mary Church, with interment to follow in Hope Hill Cemetery in Charlestown, N.H. • A memorial service for June Howard Shine will be held Sunday, Aug. 23, at 1 p.m. at the South Wardsboro Congregational Church. Mrs. Shine, 83, a lifetime resident of Wardsboro, died July 29.

Corrections

• Stanley William “Stasu” Aleksiewicz, 61, of Brattleboro, Died August 1 at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H., following a period of declining health. Former husband of Nancy Christmas. Father of Lance Aleksiewicz of Harrisville, R.I., and Daryl Aleksiewicz of Swanzey, N.H. Brother of Peter Aleksiewicz of Woodberry Forest, Va. Also survived by two grandchildren and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Born in Brattleboro, the son of Joseph and Sophie (Jasienowski) Aleksiewicz, he attended Saint Michael's Parochial School and was a graduate of Brattleboro Union High School, Class of 1971. He went on to attend the University of Vermont. Most recently, he worked at G.S. Precision in Brattleboro. Previously, he was a parts manager for Tri-State Automotive, and worked at the Vermont State Liquor Store, both in Brattleboro. For many years, he was active with the Brattleboro Little League Program, volunteering as an umpire. Prior to obtaining his umpire's license, he received his training in Williamsport, Pa. He was a communicant of St. Michael's Roman Catholic Church and was a member of the B.P.O. Elks, Brattleboro Lodge #1499. He enjoyed billiards and was active in several greater Brattleboro area leagues. Of his other pastimes, he enjoyed playing cards and was an avid Boston Red Sox and New England Patriots fan. Memorial information: A funeral Mass was held on Aug. 10 at St. Michael's Catholic Church, with committal rites and burial in Saint Michael's Parish Cemetery. • Debra Ann Rider, 56, of Newfane. Died Aug. 1. Born in Townshend, the daughter of Shelbajean and the late Darwin Hescock, she attended school in Townshend and graduated from Leland & Gray Union High School. Besides her mother, she is survived by brothers Douglas Hescock of Hinsdale, N.H., and Mark Hescock of Townshend; nieces Alicia and Amanda Hescock and nephew Bradley Hescock; fiance Carter van Iderstine; numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins; and a dear friend, Joan Flynn of Newfane.
