• The following local students recently graduated from Castleton State College: Allyson Davis of Cambridgeport, with a B.S. in biology; Jack DelPriore of Brattleboro, with a B.A. in literature; Erin Leblanc of Brattleboro, cum laude with a B.A. in health science; Mariah Lesure of Vernon, with a B.A. in psychology; Alyson Marcucci of West Dover, summa cum laude with a B.S. in business admininstration; and Seth Pletcher of Dummerston, with a B.S. in computer information systems.

• Harrison Johnson of Marlboro graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from The College of Saint Rose in Albany, N.Y.

• Michael Squindo of Wilmington has earned a master's of social work degree from Springfield (Mass.) College for studies completed in 2015.

Alexander C. Breau of Vernon graduated Cum Laude from Western New England University in Springfield, Mass., with a B.S. in computer science on May 16. He was also named to the Dean's List for the spring 2015 semester.

• Megan Walker of Brattleboro was named to the Dean's List at the University of New Haven for the spring 2015 semester.

William C. Bourque, an economics major from East Dover, was named to the President's List for the spring 2015 semester at Western New England University.

• James Moore of Saxtons River has been named to the Dean's List for the spring 2015 semester at the University of Hartford.

• Kerry Howard of Londonderry, a psychology major and member of the Class of 2015, was named to the spring 2015 Dean's List at Stonehill College in Easton, Mass.

• Rebecca O'Neill of Westminster, a senior and a Latin American studies major at Bates College in Lewiston, Maine, recently helped the school win its first ever NCAA team championship as a member of the women's rowing team. Bates topped defending champion Trinity College on May 30 to capture the national title by one point.

• Caitlin McCloskey-Meyer, a dance major, was named to the spring 2015 Dean's List at Adelphi University in Garden City, N.Y.

Transitions

• Vermont Kin As Parents, a nonprofit that supports Vermont grandparents and other relatives who are raising children often because of parental substance abuse, incarceration, or mental health issues, recently hired Michael Mrowicki of Putney as its new executive director. Mrowicki, a state representative who serves on the House Human Services Committee, has extensive experience in human services and nonprofit management.

• Messenger Valley Pharmacy recently named Rich Comforto as its new Business Manager. He will oversee the business and marketing aspects of the pharmacy. Joanne Ryan, RPh, will remain as the Pharmacist Manager.

Awards

• Julie Stoughton and Shenandoah Gilbert were recently named Brattleboro Memorial Hospital's Employees of the Year. Stoughton is the lead endoscopy technician in BMH's Perioperative Services Department and has been at the hospital for 12 years. Gilbert has been a receptionist at Brattleboro Internal Medicine, a member practice of the BMH Physician Group, for the last five years.

• Dr. Robert E. Simpson Jr., outgoing President and CEO of the Brattleboro Retreat, will be presented with the hospital's 2015 Anna Marsh Award this fall. Named for the founder of the Brattleboro Retreat, the Anna Marsh Award is an annual recognition that was established in 2009 to honor individuals for their advocacy on behalf of people with mental illness and addiction.

• David Morgan Chatterton, 67, of Hinsdale, N.H. Died December 12, 2013. Husband of the late Debby Madden. Former husband of Marci Clingan of Buckatunna, Miss. Son of the late Harley Meade Chatterton Jr. and Elizabeth March Underwood. Stepson of the late Lona E. Chatterton. Brother of Colleen Chatterton of Cambridge, Mass., and the late Barbara “Dolli” Chatterton Dow. Father of Nicholas Chatterton of Springville, Utah, Jason Chatterton of Buckatunna, Miss., Brian Chatterton of Meridian, Miss., Andrea Durak of Sanford, Fla., and Russell Chatterton of Leakesville, Miss. Stepfather of Jen Barbour Boeve of Leadville, Colo., and Timothy Barbour of Gahanna, Ohio. Born in Brattleboro, he was a graduate of Brattleboro Union High School, Class of 1964. He had a great sense of fun and was a practical joker. A naturally talented musician, he was the drummer for a Brattleboro band known as “The Rogues” in his late high school years. He was accepted at Berklee College of Music in Boston, but he instead enlisted in the Army in 1965 and was sent to Vietnam. Trained by the Army in helicopter and aircraft maintenance, in Vietnam he worked on helicopters that rescued downed combat soldiers. After completing a yearlong tour in Vietnam, he was stationed in Stuttgart, Germany, where his lifelong love of animals was put to use training Doberman Pinschers and Great Danes. After 8 {1/2} years of military service, he was honorably discharged in 1973, and returned to Brattleboro. Pitney Bowes trained him in Albany, N.Y., to repair office machines and he would travel throughout New England working for Pitney Bowes, Baker's Office Supplies, and Simco electronics. In his leisure time, he could be found on his motorboat, fishing and camping on the Connecticut River with his wife. Every summer, they loaded up their car and headed for Maine to go deep sea fishing. The VFW was an important part of his life. He was a member of the House Committee and, for some time, a member of the Color Guard. He and his wife volunteered to cook each year at the annual Brattleboro Christmas breakfast. Memorial information: A memorial potluck get-together to celebrate his life and the life of his wife, Debbie Madden, will be held at the Brattleboro VFW, 40 Black Mountain Rd., on Sunday, July 12, from 1 to 3 p.m. Any questions can be directed to Colleen Chatterton at 617-714-3185.

• Barbara A. (Carman) Flynn, 68, of Jamaica. Died June 22 in Noble Hospital in Westfield, Mass. Mother of Danielle West and her husband, Dana of Jamaica. Sister of Michael Carman of Indiana, Susan Patch and her husband, Lowell, of Bernardston, Mass., Claire Pisarcik and her husband, Jim, of Feeding Hills, Mass., and the late Bill and Ray Carman. She was born in Ludlow, Mass., daughter of the late Herbert and Antoinette (Boucher) Carman. She grew up in Springfield, Mass., and attended Springfield Technical High School. She lived in Westfield for many years before moving to Vermont with her daughter. She worked for Forbes & Wallace and Burt Printing, both in Springfield, and Betts Plumbing in Westfield. She also worked as a CNA in Greenfield at area nursing homes. She retired in 2006 from Old Colony Envelope in Westfield, where she worked for many years. After retirement she enjoyed taking care of her family and family gatherings. She enjoyed cross stitching, reading, and going to lunch. MEMORIAL INFORMATION: A funeral service was held June 27 at Trinity United Methodist Church in Springfield, Mass. Burial was private. Donations to the Jamaica Volunteer Fire Department, P.O. Box 285, Jamaica, VT. 05343.

• Delia E (Root) Hamblin, 99, of Melrose, Mass., formerly of Medford, Mass., and Brattleboro. Died June 19. Wife of the late Robert S. Hamblin. Mother of Marie (Holly) Bowen and her husband, Robert of Lynchburg, Va.; Maureen Buzby of Melrose; Eileen Hamblin and her husband, Lawrence Cannon, of Melrose; Robert L. Hamblin and the late Suzanne of Hinsdale, N.H.; Michael Hamblin and his wife, Michelle, of Arlington, Mass.; and Ramona Hamblin and her husband, George Perides of Newton, Mass. Memorial information: A funeral Mass was held at St. Mary's Church in Melrose on June 27. Interment was private. Donations to Hallmark Health Hospice, Mystic Valley Elder Services, or a charity of one's choice.

• Cyril “Ken” Heile, 80, of Guilford. Died June 25 at Thompson House in Brattleboro. Husband of Carolyn “Cal” Heile for 44 years. Born and raised in Cincinnati, Ohio, he was a classical languages graduate of Xavier University, served his country as a member of the Army, went on to study Spanish at L'Universite de las Americas in Mexico City, and received his M.A. from the University of Michigan. While living in Cincinnati, he taught junior high school, was a technician and cameraman for radio and television, was an active ham radio operator, and was activities director and diving coach at Phillips Swim Club. At the University of Michigan, the Heiles were resident directors of Eaton House dorm, where they formed many lasting memories and friendships. A resident of Vermont since 1973, he was a Spanish and Latin teacher at Brattleboro Union High School until his retirement in 1995. He continued teaching in retirement at Mount Snow Academy until this year. He served the Brattleboro and Guilford communities in numerous ways, including the BCTV Board, the Guilford Historical Society, the Windham County Retired Teachers Association, Friends of Algiers Village, the Brattleboro Museum & Art Center, Brattleboro Winter Carnival committee, Youth Services Host Home, the Haunted House fundraiser for KidsPLAYce, ELF/Four Winds volunteer at Guilford Elementary School, and springboard diving instructor at the Brattleboro and Vernon pools. The Heiles were the recipients of the Guilford Citizens of the Year award in grateful recognition of their steadfast volunteerism within the community. They also used their musical talents through their decades-long performances at community events, nursing homes, weddings and funerals, and as leaders of St. Michael's Catholic Church's folk group. Memorial information: A celebration of his life will be held on Saturday, July 18, at 11 a.m., at Guilford Central Elementary School. Donations to AmeriCares, the activities departments of Thompson House, Bradley House, or The Gathering Place, or to the local charity of one's choice. • Charles Dudley “Chick” Miller, 87, of Walpole, N.H. Died June 19 at Maplewood Nursing Home in Westmoreland, N.H. Husband of the late Helen C. “Chickie” Miller for 52 years. Father of Jeffrey Miller and his wife, Diane; Diana Pace and her husband, C.T.; Allegra Miller and her husband, Bob Rinkema; and Brian Miller and his wife, Sharon. Sister of Marian Castell and her husband, George. He was born in New York City, the son of the late Dudley and Ruth Miller, and grew up in Upper Montclair, N.J. He graduated from Williams College in 1949 and worked for the Defense Department for several years. Chick and Chickie were married in 1952, and moved to Walpole in 1954. He was vice president of Robertson Paper Company for more than 30 years. He was dedicated to serving his community. In addition to his 15 years as a Walpole Selectman, he was a member and chairman of the Fall Mountain Regional School Board. He served as the treasurer for the Bridge Memorial Library for 17 years, was on the board and served several terms as president of the Meeting Waters YMCA, was on the Hooper Institute Board for 18 years, and the Southwest Community Services Board of Directors. His numerous interests included history, fishing and woodworking, but his life was centered around his family. He could often be found on the sidelines of many sporting events, or in the audience for music, dance and theatrical performances of his children and grandchildren. He especially loved to support his wife in all her many community activities. His behind the scenes help was integral to the founding of the Walpole Players and Junior Players and the creation of the Helen Miller Theater. Memorial information: A memorial service will be held on July 24, at 11 a.m., in the First Congregational Church in Walpole. • A funeral service for Rev. Norman R. Runnion, 85, of Brookfield, who died June 19 at Gifford Medical Center in Randolph, will be held on Wednesday, July 8, at 2 p.m., at St. John's Episcopal Church in Randolph.
