The Keene chapter of the Barbershop Harmony Society and the Cheshiremen Chorus will present their 63rd annual show on Saturday, May 16, at 7 p.m., at the Monadnock Regional High School auditorium in Swanzey Center, N.H.
The groups will present an evening of a cappella harmony in the first portion of the show with the production of “Somebody Stole My Gal!” The performance is a “mysterious and romantic travelogue that follows our hero on a journey to find his lost love,” according to organizers.
Performing next is special guest Exchange Street, a Portland, Maine-based quartet. The group currently ranks fifth-place in the Northeastern District of the Barbershop Harmony Society.
Exchange Street sings a repertoire reflective of a variety of musical tastes, ranging from contemporary up-tunes to nostalgic barbershop harmony ballads.
The third act of the evening features Afterglow, a post-show reception. After the stage lights are out, join the Cheshiremen Chorus and quartets for more harmony, singing, food, and refreshments and some fun at the Afterglow, held in the high school's cafeteria.
The Keene chapter is one of 800 chapters of the Barbershop Harmony Society in the United States and Canada, formed to sustain, encourage, and preserve the barbershop harmony style. Today, the Barbershop Harmony Society is the largest fraternity of singers in the world. The Keene chapter was founded in 1952 and includes men of all ages and from all walks of life, from New Hampshire, Massachusetts and Vermont.
The Keene chapter meets weekly on Tuesdays at 7 p.m. at the Keene United Church of Christ at the head of Central Square. Any singing man is always welcome to visit on any Tuesday night. Come to the special “Open House Guest Nights” on the first three Tuesdays of June (2, 9, and 16) - no auditions required.
