WBA plans April 9 meeting on village streetscape
WEST BRATTLEBORO - On Thursday, April 9, at 7 p.m., the West Brattleboro Association (WBA) will host a meeting to discuss ways to spruce up the West Brattleboro village streetscape.
Called a charrette, this meeting will provide a forum in which stakeholders collaborate in a creative design process. It will be held in the Melrose Terrace Community Room.
All residents are invited to talk about such topics as where to place new plantings, whether to place public sculpture and/or book exchange boxes, and a multitude of other street enhancing ideas.
Representatives from the Brattleboro Planning Services Department, Windham Regional Commission and Brattleboro Department of Public Works will help facilitate the meeting.

'The Amazing Golden Ratio: Art, Math, and Nature' at Putney Public Library
PUTNEY - Mathematics educator Shana Frank will present “The Amazing Golden Ratio: Art, Math, and Nature” on Thursday., April 9, from 7 to 8:30 p.m., at the Putney Public Library.
This interactive program explores the history and geometry of the golden ratio. A slide show depicts the golden ratio in architecture, fine art, and the natural world.
Frank teaches middle and high school math in southeast Vermont. She holds a Certificate of Advanced Graduate Studies in Mathematics Education from Boston University. Her interests include number patterns, geometric designs, and making math accessible.

BFUHS to host Career Day on April 10
WESTMINSTER - The third annual Windham Northeast Supervisory Union's Career Day will take place on Friday, April 10, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., in the Bellows Falls Union High School gymnasium.
Students in grades 4-12 will spend time visiting employers from all career fields. WNESU's Career Day provides students to interact with professionals to gain first-hand knowledge and perspectives and perspective of post-secondary education and career options. The hope is that students will make meaningful connections between their education today and their work and career life tomorrow.
Organizers have encouraged students to pepper employers with questions about the industry, the available jobs, educational requirements, and what the path to the career looks like.
RFPL hosts annual book sale
BELLOWS FALLS - The Rockingham Free Public Library hosts its annual book sale on Saturday, April 11 through Saturday, May 2.
Plenty of good quality hardcover and paperback books for adults will be on sale. Lightly used DVDs, CDs and children's books will be on sale as well.
On Friday, April 10, from 5 to 8 p.m., the Friends of the Library will host a special Book Sale Preview night, just for Friends members. On Saturday, April 11, doors will open at 9 a.m. and close at 5 p.m. After that, the book sale will be open during library hours until Saturday, May 2.
Beginning on April 20, book sale items will be 50 percent off. The Bag & Box Sale will begin on April 27, when a bag or box of books will be $3 each.

Lifeguard training offered in Vernon
VERNON - A lifeguard training class will be forming in Vernon. Interested persons must be 15 years of age or more. Must be able to swim 500 yards using two strokes; retrieve three rings under water 15 feet deep in one breath, and retrieve and return a 10 pound brick in 1 minute, 40 minutes.
A pre-informational and organizational meeting scheduled for Sunday, April 12, at 6:30 p.m. The American Red Cross materials are used in this training. Lifeguard, waterfront guard, CPR for the lifeguard, first aid, and AED use are taught.

Between a rock and a hard place: Dealing with kidney stones
BRATTLEBORO - As part of the Wellness in Windham Spring 2015 calendar, BMH urologist Craig Rinder, MD, will present a program on Monday, April 13, at 6 p.m., in the Brew Barry Conference Center. His topic of discussion will be kidney stones.
At this free program, Dr. Rinder will discuss how kidney stones form, the ways they are identified, methods of treatment, and what can be done to prevent them. This is a great opportunity for participants to learn more and have their questions answered.
Dr. Rinder received his doctor of medicine from McGill University (Montreal), after which he served his internship at St. Francis Hospital & Medical Center in Hartford, Conn., and completed his residency at the Medical University of South Carolina. He is board-certified in urology and a fellow with the American College of Surgeons.

Wild hog talk presented at Sportsmen Inc.
GUILFORD - Sportsmen Inc., a local hunting, shooting and fishing club located at 2081 Creamery Rd., invites the public and its club members to a free guest speaker program on wild hogs of South Carolina on Tuesday, April 15, at 7:15 p.m.
Marvin Carley of Hinsdale N.H., will speak on his personal experience trapping wild hogs for the federal government. Wild hogs are invasive and very destructive to all vegetation. All are welcome to attend.
Spring pruning workshop presented in Putney
PUTNEY - A pruning workshop will be offered at Green Mountain Orchards in Putney on Saturday, April 18. The cost is $25 per person, and all proceeds will go to help with workshops and outreach programs sponsored by the Windham County Natural Resources Conservation District.
Learn how to prune raspberry and blueberry bushes, peach, and apple trees. Reservations are required by April 15. Beekeeping workshop offered in Alstead
ALSTEAD, N.H. - Charles Andros, former New Hampshire/Vermont Apiary Inspector, will hold a beekeeping workshop from 1 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, April 18, at 18 MacLean Road, in Alstead. Look for the “BEE” sign on the south side of Walpole Valley Road.
Topics of discussion will be early spring management: locating apiaries, equipment, handling bees, feeding syrup and supplements, making nuclei, reversing, and requeening. Bring a veil, if you have one, as participants will be opening some colonies. The workshop will be inside if it is a rainy day.

Methodist Women host annual rummage sale
BRATTLEBORO - The United Methodist Women of the First United Methodist Church will be holding its Spring Rummage Sale on Saturday, April 18, from 9 a.m. to noon.
New and used clothing will be featured. Prices are not marked. Customers may take what they need and pay what they can. Monies received are given to both local and Methodist Mission needs, including the Brattleboro Drop In Center, Brattleboro Pastoral Counseling Center, Women's Freedom Center, Morningside Shelter, Hospice, Windham Child Care, CHABA, and others.

AAUW offers college scholarships for women
BRATTLEBORO - The Brattleboro Branch of the American Association of University Women once again is offering scholarships of up to $1,000 to qualified female candidates who are residents of Windham County.
Both graduating high school senior girls and mature women continuing their higher education are eligible to apply. Applications will be judged on academic performance, extracurricular activities, community involvement, and financial need.
Senior students from area high schools, preparatory schools, or home schools, who are legal residents of Windham County may apply. They must be enrolling in and accepted for full time study in a two-year associate degree or four year undergraduate program.
Mature women, 25 years or older, who are legal residents of Windham County and have been accepted to or are continuing in an accredited two- or four-year undergraduate degree program as part or full time students in the fall, are encouraged to apply.
